WCLL Action (Feb. 3-5)-Discuss Games/Report Scores

Postby WaterBoy on Sun Feb 05, 2006 5:21 am

UCSD 23
LMU 9

Very one-sided game

Just to add a little bit of depth to this comment since I was there- The score was 6-1 at the end of the first quarter. The second opened up with an LMU goal, followed by two UCSD goals, then another LMU goal. Then UCSD went on a 10-0 run to finish out the half at 18-3. At times, keeping stats on the sidelines, it was impossible to finish recording one entry for a goal without the next already being tallied.

LMU's goalie was getting absolutely shelled and at the end of the first half had a save ratio of about .20 - with 4 saves. To his credit, he kept his head in the game and had a very strong second half, closing the door to quite a few point blank shots from UCSD's attackmen.

Of particular strength in the game-

Chris McCall of UCSD- tallied 5 goals in the second quarter alone
Nick Dean of UCSD- back as his former self, balancing (if memory serves) with 4g and 4a
Tim Ury of LMU- Although the point tallies aren't as high for this player, he was consistently a threat on offense, creating several good feeds to open players. If I recall correctly he had 1g, 3a (but that may be wrong, I don't have the stats with me now)
#9 for LMU- although there is no player of that name on their website, this player was a clear presence in the offensive efforts of LMU, with hustle and ability to make plays.
Brandon Hays for UCSD- The longpole made his presence known during the game with six solo takeaways and a goal to end the first half.

Q abut LMU

Postby Dan Wishengrad on Sun Feb 05, 2006 12:04 pm

I don't see Joe Picha's name on the LMU roster -- does anybody know why he is not playing?

If Picha played, the Tritons probably would have lost.

I too was at the game. Although cheering for the underdog Lions.

One word describes UCSD: WOW. They are awesome. Coach Hughes and his staff have done an incredible job and I would say they have all the tools to be top 5 in the country. They have coaching, talent, discipline, and speed. Clearly a part of the elite in the WCLL (and National MDIA). It's a long season I will be rooting for them. If they improve, as most teams will from this point, they will be very very dangerous. I was especially impressed with attackman #25 Chris McCall; very athletic and tough to stop. I think he had at least 6 goals. He pretty much over shadowed Nick Dean in my opinion.

LMU gave it their all. They were just out matched by a very good team. They had some bright spots after the 2nd qtr melt down, including performances by sophomore James Hinkamp (#9, not sure why he wasn't wearing #8..?) and Tyler Goeckner-Zoeller (#37) who had 3 goals from the midfield. Tim Ury is a freshman who seems to becoming more and more comfortable with the college game. He should continue to lead the Lions. Joe Picha chose not to play this season. And just as an FYI to 'sohotrightnow' he would not have made much difference, if any at all.

As a general observation; the WCLL seems to get better and better each year. This game wasn't sloppy, both sides hit hard and had talent. One sided, yes, but the level of play is definitely improving each year.

USC was down 6-2 in the second quarter and came back in the second half outscoring the Cardinal (9-2) to win by three. It was an impressive comback as the trojans continue to show tremendous improvement. They play Cal Poly this upcomming friday which should prove to be an interesting game!

If anyone is going to the Cal-Berkley v Cal Poly game an summaries would be much appreciated!!!

Wow looks like cal is plunging to the bottom of the wcll this year.... they looked pretty weak in fall ball.... i would have thought that they could have put up at least one goal

i can't believe that people even had cal close in this game. I did think it would be little closer than the final score but polu just dominated. Their freshman class is excellent and they look to be a huge threat this year. Oh yeah, and it also doesn't hurt to have AA attackman Tim Casey back this year either.

Little surprised that Cal didn't put in a couple goals. It hurts that Cal's best offensive player is academically ineligible, but it obviously wouldn't have made a difference. I have a feeling that Poly and UCSD may finally beat SB this year.

As far as the level of play improving...I wholeheartedly disagree. There is more parity, but the teams of 2006 do not hold a candle to the Sonoma, Cal and SB teams of the 90s and early 00s.

UCSB vs CAL

Postby laxmom on Mon Feb 06, 2006 11:56 am

They don't just have some "pretty decent rookies," but a number of returning sophomores & juniors that are quite good (let alone the seniors). Why not consider the possibility that UCSB is working hard to get the job done this year? They are not trying to replace the players that were "lost" to graduation, but are simply moving on in the new season with dedicated underclassmen that intend on assuming leadership positions thru their efforts on the field. There certainly are numerous kids on the team that have enormous potential and intend on proving it, despite those who doubt their abilities to be a dominant team once again.

With CP beating up on Cal...badly. Is there a challenge in their region to make a close game against CP?
