Brandt's Super Bowl tidbits

Postby Sonny on Fri Feb 03, 2006 11:34 am

Speaking of parties, did you know the average Super Bowl get-together has 17 people? And if we're speaking of parties, we might as well talk pizza. There are more pizzas sold on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year. Pizza companies will have many commercials on that day. Domino's will deliver twice as many pizzas as they would on a normal Sunday, and their delivery drivers will travel four million miles that day. Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest day of food consumption behind Thanksgiving.

Five writers have covered all 39 Super Bowls (Jerry Green, Jerry Izenberg, Dave Klein, Bob Oates and Edwin Pope). The list will shrink to four this year because Oates will remain in California after his wife was injured in a fall.

There are six photographers who have worked every Super Bowl: John Biever, Walter Iooss, Dick Raphael, Mickey Palmer, Steve Sabol and Tony Tomsic.

Another person who is not a writer or photographer but has attended all 39 Super Bowls is longtime Packer Lee Remmel, the team historian and former public-relations director.

The numbers game
More than 130 million people will watch the game in the United States, of which 55 million will be women. The Super Bowl drew 42 percent more women viewers than the Academy Awards. More people watched Super Bowl XXXIX (133.7 million viewers) than voted in the 2004 presidential election. More than 1.5 million television sets will be sold the week leading up to the Super Bowl. Sales of big-screen TVs show a fivefold increase during Super Bowl week.

There are 7.5 million parties on Super Bowl Sunday with 43.9 million partygoers. It is estimated 14,500 tons of chips and 4,000 tons of popcorn will be eaten on Super Bowl Sunday.

Of the 32 teams in the league, 26 of them have participated in a Super Bowl: 13 from the AFC and 13 from the NFC. That's perhaps another sign that the competitive balance in the NFL is very good.

Now that the Hawks have made the big game... Name the four remaining NFL teams that haven't been to the Super Bowl.

The Chargers have been to a SB before. They got hammered by the 49ers. Your other three choices are correct.

Correct. There are actually 6 NFL teams that haven't appeared in a SB, not four.

Houston
Arizona
Detroit
Cleveland
are four of them.

Jacksonville has got to be one of them. New Orleans is the other one. Another could be a trick question, Indianapolis. The Colts have been to a SB, but as a Baltimore team, not an Indianapolis team.
