Quiz: Personal foul not served

Postby LaxRef on Sun Jan 29, 2006 8:33 pm

Under what circumstances can player A1 commit a personal foul, be correctly identified by the officials as the player who committed the personal foul, and yet not serve penalty time for that foul?

1. Player is ejected for a conduct foul on way to box

2. player is seriously injured (and must be taken to hospital) during play between flag and whistle.

Those are correct answers. There are at least two more good ones (and maybe a few goofy ones).

You can be a goalie and commit a personal foul, but if there's no back-up goalie to take your place while you serve the time, the in-home has to go instead.

Right?

Negative. Goalies serve their own penalties under college rules.

High school rules too. They don't have the explicit A.R.s that they have in NCAA (I submitted them this year to make things clearer), but the high school rules make no provision for anyone serving anyone elses penalty time except for the in-home, who serves bench penalties and penalties that are not against a specific player.

See:

NCAA Rule 6-6 wrote:A.R. 32: Goalkeeper B1 commits a personal or technical foul. Can the in-home serve the penalty? RULING: No. B1 must serve the penalty, and a legally-equipped substitute goalkeeper must report into the game. If Team B has only one set of goalie equipment, B1 will be given a reasonable amount of time to switch his equipment to another player; in this situation, if Team B wants to get their original goalkeeper back into the game, they must do so during a timeout or between periods.

A.R. 33: Goalkeeper B1 must leave the game due to an injury or expulsion. Team B refuses to send in another player to play that position. RULING: Team B must put a legally-equipped goalkeeper on the field or they forfeit the game.

Just thought of one more scenario.

A1 commits two personals and starts serving time for one penalty. During the first penalty time, B1 scores. Thus all penalties are released and player does not serve time for second personal.

A1 commits a foul during overtime. During the flag down possession, Team B scores a goal ending the game. A1 does not serve any time in the box due to the game being over.

That is a valid answer.

This is a good answer. There are still 2 more valid answers out there, waiting to be posted.

Just like this case - A1 commits personal foul under a minute to play in regulation play. During the flag down possession, the game clock expires. A1 does not serve any time in the box due to the game being over.

Yep.

There's still one more where the official can point right at the guy who committed the personal foul, everyone knows the guy is guilty, but he doesn't serve penalty time. It's not quite so obvious as the other ones.

Oh, wait, I just thought of another one. Okay, two not so obvious ones, although we've gotten really close to one of them already.

When the personal foul is on a coach... But I know nothing about that sort of thing happening.
