Kobe this or Kobe that

Postby tamu33 on Wed Dec 21, 2005 7:49 pm

While I hate any team that beats the Cubans (I mean Mavericks), Kobe was in a trance last night and through 3 quarters outscored the Mavs 62- 61. Kobe sat out of the 4th because the game was something like 92 to 61 at that point. The Lakers record for points in a game was in range (i think 70 something) and possibly an 80 or 90 point game for Kobe. Do you think he should have gone for it?

What does everyone think?

Personally I think anytime a record can be achieved, I think an attempt is ok.

what happens if he got hurt when they were up 30???(like profit did in that game) i think kobe was trying to show he was a team player by sitting down and letting other guys get some PT, and maybe trying to earn some brownie points with phllip by sitting out the 4th

haha I doubt sitting out made him look like a team player. Anyone that knows anything about basketball, which i'm sure his team does, knows that kobe isn't a team player. Yah he got 61 points, but he also had ZERO assists. Kobe possibily the best offensive skills; but not the best offensive player in the NBA.

Ok So two things Danny

1. What does a broken leg WR from 'Bama have anything to do with this conversation. But none the less, if we are just throwing names out there.... then I will say Gary Auerbach.

2. I think Iverson is probably the best offensive player today. He has more points, more assists (by the way on his 62 point night he had 0 assists) and free throws (although iverson's FT percentage is lower) than Kobe.

Gary Auerbach was the 1995 world freestyle Frisbee champion.

Oops! misread that...
I think Shaq could be the best offensive player. He is really unstoppable, and he would have to work to have an off night shooting, since they're all dunks anyway. I think if they decided they wanted to get him the scoring record and just fed him in the post,he could eclipse Wilt's record.
I saw clips of him the other night on SportsCenter - he is just a freak of nature. How'd you like to get pulled over by him in his new off-court pursuit? I don't think I'd be giving him any backtalk - "Yes, officer!"

Data Collected from http://www.allsports.com/cgi-bin/showstory.cgi?story_id=52356

Data is one year old but still shows how dominant he really is. Didn't really look very hard for up to date stats.

Approximately one year ago, Iverson had as many as 50 point games as Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal - combined. Bryant has five and O'Neal three. The only other active players with multiple 50-point games are Jamison (two) and Tracy McGrady (four).

Iverson has had at least one 40-point game in each of his nine seasons. He had five (in a row) as a rookie in 1996-97, one in 1997-98, a pair in lockout-shortened 1998-99, eight (to match his previous career total) in 1999-2000, 17 (to surpass his previous career total) in his MVP season of 2000-01, nine in 2001-02, five in 2002-03, three last season (2003-04) and four this season (2004-05, since data is old... could be more).

With 54 40-point games in 559 career games, Iverson averages one every 10.35 games.

personally i would have rather him be in the game, as opposed to the broadcast crew cutting t ohim and seeing his smug, arrogant self on the sidelines yucking it up. I will never root for any team with Kob on it, even if it is the Mavericks, the guy just reminds me of OJ. I cant look at either of them without thinking the worst.

Great player left in a blowout game who's season (career?) was ended while trying to run up the score.

Don't think Kobe could land awkwardly as well?

Kobe, Iverson is debatable. I was just curious who you guys thought was the best.

Gotcha.... I didn't know that he was left in during a blow-out game.

That was definitely a nasty break though.

To me: offensive player means giving me the most opportunities to score. While Kobe is great at shooting; but does him being on the floor make everyone else better. I tend to think that it does the exact opposite. When AI scores 40, he is most likely to have a min. of 10-13 assists in that game; Kobe averages around 3-5 for his career and most of the nights it is 2-4. When AI steps out there one must think of his driving capability, outside shooting, bringing the ball upcourt and his outlet passes. With Kobe, you worry abou his pull-up jumper and his driving the basket. Also, you got to admit that when a guy takes that many shots for a team (68% of the Lakers shots, last time I heard) hes going to get points. AI gets the points and helps others... to me that is the best offensive player.

2004-05 season
AI points 30.7ppg assists 596
KB points 27.6ppg assists 398

I would rather have a guy post AI type numbers than KB numbers because more people are involved.

Prothro broke his leg on 4 and 6 from the Gators 42 yard line when he ran a bomb to the endzone with around 8 min remaining and the score @ 30-3 bama.

the main point in the kobe thing for me is that his team won; over the mavs at that. if its working, feed the hot hand. ai's numbers are impressive.
