I will defer to a previous post in another thread for this answer:

Yes, I admit I had to look this up. I'm not as savvy on my sports trivia as many of you.
Detroit name changes:
They started out in the 20's as the Detroit Cougars. In 1930 the name was changed to the Falcons for two years before the final change to the Red Wings.
Two interesting bits of Trivia:
The winged wheel has been the team logo since the Red Wings got their name in 1932.
Detroit won their first Stanley Cup in 1936 defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs three games to one.

Where did the tradition of throwing octopii onto the ice come from?
It used to take 8 wins to win the Stanley Cup (a best of 15 if you will - or, two best-of-seven series)...hence the octopus became a symbol of winning the Cup.

I believe the tradition of throwing the octopii on the ice was probably started by the Red Wings fans if I recall reading something about that. However, as to why and how it started, I would be beating my chest as if I were to say, "Beats me."

This link is devoted to young adolescents where they can learn about unique (I prefer to call that rather than bizzare, yet it is still an accurate word though) traditions in sports, i.e. throwing octopii on ice after big Detroit Red Wings games:

Speaking of crazy or unique traditions, I am sure there are several USL MDIA teams that have those traditions.
