Dominican University of California

Postby exlax on Sat Feb 12, 2005 8:23 pm

I just returned from watching the second and third quarters of the Dominican University versus Notre Dame de Namur game at Dominican's campus. Based on Cal's dominating score over Dominican I did not expect a close game. I have no idea what the final score was, but NDNU was clearly the dominant team.
I was interested in the makeup of Dominican's roster. Since NDNU jump-started their program by recruiting heavily in Canada, I wondered where Dominican would recruit. The program handed out at the game bills this as the"First ever home game" and Dominican had a roster of 18 players, 17 of whom were from California with the remaining player from Massachusetts. Most of the players were from the Bay Area or Los Angeles/San Diego.
Best of luck to Coach Sean Mahoney and his young team

They intend to be a DII program and are listed as such on Laxpower. I don't know what sort of a probationary period is required.

Hackalicious, my bad.
Laxpower lists a "Dominican College" but it is in New York. Dominican University recently changed its name from Dominican College but I thought I had seen Dominican University listed on Laxpower list about a month ago. I still believe Dominican intends to become DII.

Dominican Universities' website, www.dominican.edu, only mentions lacrosse as a new sport but gives no further information.
The program that I picked up at the game contained the "Dominican Penguins Roster" which listed the name, position, year, height and hometown of the 18 players.
According to the program you can "Listen to live games broadcast world-wide on the student-operated http://radio.dominican.edu"
Further information on the California Pacific Conference can be found at:
www.calpacathletics.org
Notre Dame de Namur is also a member of this Division II conference.

For what it is worth, the California Pacific Conference is not an NCAA conference but an NAIA. Some members however field NCAA teams.

More information on the sport's programs (including lacrosse) at Dominican University:

They have a ways to go, but if they stick with it they may find success.
