I believe that North Dallas Forty could be considered fact based. Isn't based on the 1970's Cowboys teams?

Plot Summary: A semi-fictional account of life as a professional Football (American-style) player. Loosely based on the Dallas Cowboys team of the early 1970s. -IMDB

Hmmm.

that were not based on a true story

where the team did not win (championship/big game/focus of the movie).

That was based on a true story and I thought Permian won the Texas State Championship in the book/movie.

They lost to Dallas Carter in the championship game.

My bad. You are right. They won the state title the following year (as a follow up to the book).

Golf- Tin Cup, nicknamed after being hit in the cup so much while playing catcher in high school, this golf pro from west texas has a shot to win the US open, but gets too aggressive going for the green in two and finds the water on multiple occasions before finally hitting the green. Loses the open by a lot.

Baseball - Mr. 3000, the bernie mac led Milwaukee Brewers finish 3rd in the NL central and Mr. 3000 only ends up with 2,999 hits.

Basketball - The Sixth Man - Washington Huskies have a pair of high flying brothers leading their team when one of the brothers has a heart abnormality causing his death after a dunk. He comes back to the team as a ghost and helps the team make it to the NCAA Tournament when the other brother asks him not to help anymore. The team goes to the NCAA finals and loses on a last second three pointer by Marlon Wayans (he is the living brother.).

Football - Necessary Roughness - Texas State, I believe named after North Texas State wins one game and loses a bunch, with hilarious consequences...

Hockey - The only hockey movies I can think of are Miracle (true story won gold medal), Mighty Ducks (won pee wee championship {1} and Jr. Goodwill games Gold Medal{2}, and won respect in their grudge match vs the Varsity {3}), and Slap Shot (Can't remember if they won the championship).

Lacrosse - In American Pie the lacrosse team that Stiffler plays on with the guys who leaves the game to go to the glee club competition, I think they lost the state championship.

Dallas Carter won the State championship, but it was found later that they used inelligible players and were stripped of the title, I believe that is why the book states that Permian won. Carter beat Permian in the state semifinal.

Slapshot is definitely the greatest hockey movie ever. I have no basis for this statement, other than the fact that I grew up a hockey-kid and I was programmed to say so. Yes they won the championship. The ref gave the Chiefs the game when McCrackin punched him.
