2006 MDIA National Championship - location

The weather in Denver is pleasant that time of year. In the high 70's low 80's lot's of sunshine and no Humidity. Yes I have seen it snow in May and June in Colorado but that is very unlikely.

When I Coached there at Mines, we had some great weather in February but in April and March we had some snow. By mid May the weather has settled down and Spring is in full gear.

Because of all the growth in the sport of Lacrosse in the Denver area nearby Albuquerque is about to take off in Lacrosse so I'm very proud of the strides made in the sport in the region. Look for some good growth with Lacrosse in the region in New Mexico from Denver's popularity.

I also believe that we will draw record crowds for MDIA events in Denver and maybe even make some profits for the sport of Lacrosse and it's growth. Also like I said earlier there is a lot to do for Fans and Families in the area.

I don't know why this is continuing to be debated as there are only 2 sites being mentioned, Plano & Blaine.

However, given the choice between any other location (including Denver) or San Diego, there's no question that San Diego could outshine any of them for weather, things to do, community support, etc. $0.02 deposited.

No question San Diego would be attractive, however we have never received a serious bid from the community there. It's a moot point unless that happens. Denver, for that matter, has not bid either. Representatives from Denver have inquired about how to submit a bid, but that's it. Dallas and Minneapolis are the only options open right now. Period.

I love Diego but it is a long way for the Teams of the CCLA and the SELC and some of the other eastern teams to make the hike to Diego. Diego is just not practical. I wish it were practical to go to Diego. It is a great place.

We have to remember we are still only a Club League and we have to be practical in regard to location and finances. The cost of things is our biggest hurdle. We also need to remember that our teams don't get whole lot of support from their Institutions they represent. We all have to raise a lot of our own money to run our programs.

I've said this before, and I have yet to be convinced otherwise - it doesn't really matter if the National Championships are in a central geographic location. The majority of the teams are going to be flying in anyway, so it's much more important that the location is easily accessible by air than it lies in the central portion of the US. For instance, if I'm flying from the west coast the difference between traveling to Minnesota, St. Louis, Texas, or even Atlanta or Florida is minimal - in both time and money. You burn an entire day traveling no matter where you're going, so an extra hour on the plane doesn't mean too much. And air travel isn't figured out on a simple amount per mile basis, it has much more to do with flying into major hubs, current price wars, etc. Until a coastal location puts in a bid this is irrelevant anyway, but I would strongly suggest that US Lacrosse and the MDIA Board don't discount potential locales simply because they in California or Florida.

Another point - since the location is going to rotate periodically anyway, why not California or Florida? Each region of the country deserves a couple of years with the tournament in their back yard. Why should the central teams be the only ones who get to save on flight costs? Again, this is all a moot point until another location develops a bid, but I would love to see the tournament move to the west coast OR the east coast for a couple of years if there was a quality facility willing and able to host us.

Obviously only those two sites are being considered for this season as they were the only to put in a bid... we're just discussing future plans... bringing up ideas for later tournaments.

San Diego would be nice, or Phoenix.

I think that it is best for all involved to keep it pretty centrally located. That way California teams would have to fly to New York or vice versa.

It's too far for me to go to just watch. I'd go if I were selected to officiate, but there are guys in my league that are more qualified in terms of judgment and experience, although I'll put my rules knowledge up there with any of them.

US Lacrosse has gauranteed a decision by January 1. Hopefully it will be done sooner, but expect an announcement by New Years Day at the latest.
