Who would have thought?
If I recalled, there was one student death on UMass Amherst or it may have taken place in Boston when they were celebrating the Boston Red Sox's 2004 World Series Championship. Remember that there were several celebratory riots on UMass Amherst that night.

The student that was killed during the Red Sox went to a small college in Boston, not UMASS. I think she went to Emerson or Emanuel????
As far as the UMass danger, one of the Boston news stations had a story the other day that rebuked the 20/20 report. (funny it was channel 5, the ABC station in Boston). Basically it said that UMass does have crime, but it also has the 5th largest on campus population, around 11,000 students. When a crime happens on campus and UMass police respond , it is reported to the school books. If the Amherst police respond to an off campus crime it does not get reported to the school. With the high on campus numbers its more often than not that UMass police will respond.
I know that here at UGA there is a very small on campus population. My RA freshman year once told me that UGA likes to have Athens police come in when ever possible because it doesn't get reported on the GA record.
In addition to the UMass report, 20/20 used figures from 2002 and 2003. 20/20 failed to report that in 2004 the violent crime rate at UMass was cut nearly in half.
Finally, for those of you not familiar with Mass, Amherst and Newton are nearly 2 hours apart.

Most Dangerous Cities:
8. New Orleans
I guess getting off this list is one of the few bright spots for New Orleans.

I just came across this thread ( i know its older!) and remembered 2004, Northeastern had somthing like 5 students die in the same academic year. There was a Ski Club car accident, somone was run over by a car in the Super Bowl Riots, a Kid shot to death in an apparent robbery(believed to have been drug deal related), another that got beat up on his way home from the bar and died. And somone that jumped off the parking garage . It all happened in like a dec-june strecth too it was NUTS. IF you look at the whole city of boston there were those two BU kids that got hit by an amtrak train, and the girl who was shot in the Red Sox riot. Comm AVE to Huntington Ave had a rough couple months.
