CBS to buy college sports network CSTV

NEW YORK (AP) -- CBS, which is about to split away from the Viacom Inc. media conglomerate, has already made its first acquisition deal, agreeing to pay $325 million for a two-year-old college sports network called CSTV Networks Inc.

CBS plans to pay for the company, which was founded by sports programming entrepreneur Brian Bedol, with stock in CBS Corp., one of the two companies to be created by the end of the year when Viacom splits itself up.

I'm not sure which way this is going to go for the MDIA. Any thoughts?

To be honest, it concerns me. Yes, potentially it means more resources for CSTV, which in the past has carried lacrosse. However, come spring-time, what is the bread and butter for CBS? Hoops, hoops and more hoops.

BYUalum you read my mind, but the good news is the management will not change. Keep your fingers crossed.

Ive been a part of a bunch of mergers and aquisitions and they always say that management won't change, and the management has always been changed.

I know a little bit about this merger. CSTV has 10-year contracts with the NCAA. These contract provide for exclusive television rights, as well as web content. ESPN came late to the game on this, thus ESPNU was only launch last March.

As for what this move holds for the future, we will have to see. If you are dreaming of NCAA Lacrosse on over-the-air TV in the spring, I wouldn't hold my breath. My guess is that eventually CSTV will be bolstered by a graphics look simialr to CBS and they will share production values to start.

Then again, I could be wrong. Either way, this is a great thing for CBS and NCAA Sports, as a whole.
