Games for 2/9 - 2/15: Predict, discuss, report scores here

Postby If At First... on Sat Feb 12, 2005 11:46 am

I don't know if you remember the uproar on the sidelines in second half of that USC/Utah game in vegas, but midway through the second half, with the Utes leading 7-5, the scorekeeper informs the refs that the score is in fact 7-5 USC leading. The scorekeeper had counted Utah's last two goals for USC, and despite the uproar by scorekeeping fans and Ute players (and the admitted mistake by the ref who told us he had to go with what the table says) the utes still won 9-8 (which is really 10-6). I watched the tape of the game after the trip and sure enough, the Utes scored two goals in the first couple minutes of the second half after it was tied 5-5. It was frustrating then, but the "one-goal" loss to Utah was not that close. I actually had thought the USC players knew about the mix-up. I guess not.

I don't mean to take anything away from the USC team, this was a really frustrating game, its hard to believe stats could be screwed up that badly. Lets not forget this is the same Utah team that beat a ranked Texas team by 13 goals the night before the afore mentioned game.

In that same tournament, it took ASU overtime to beat Cal, and the following day, the Utes needed overtime to put Cal away as well. This just solidifies my view that the two teams seem to be evenly matched. It should be one of the best games of the early USLMDIA season.

Sorry about my rant, I've been holding that in since the mix up in vegas. Good luck with your season brian.

I can't speak to what exactly happened that day... But the head referee's opinion and scorecard always supercedes the scorekeeper's records when it comes to goals, timeouts, etc.

Yeah, it was pretty confusing, and I'm not sure why the problem wasn't fixed, I'm assuming the referees themselves didn't have accurate score cards. But considering I'm obsessive about counting my little brother's points (sophomore attackman Tom Fernandez #9), I can definetely say something went wrong.

Oh well, the past is the past and a win is a win.

They kept running in the third game. 24-7 over TAMU. By my count, that's three football scores in two days. Hopefully they will keep it up tomorrow. I didn't realize how much I would miss it, but except for one other exception, this weekend is the first time I have missed a CSU lacrosse game since 1999. I'm getting off this board and I'm going to cry myself to sleep. . .

If you saw the tape then I guess I'll take your word. To be entirely honest, we didn't really know what was going on with the table; we obvioulsy had no part in any errors that may have taken place. All I'm saying is that I believe our two teams were very evenly matched and the game could have easily gone either way. If anything, I think the the alleged "scoring error" (may have taken place, I'm not sure) lit a fire under your players' that helped them turn it on and finish out the game strong to get the win. Good luck this season, that's it for me on this topic.

Oh, and nice work so far this weekend CSU. You've got yourself another fan after playing for Flip this summer and alongside many of your guys...

Joe

Don't get me wrong I'm all for the Utah brotherhood of lacrosse. ASU has picked up momentum these last years. The most crucial critera I see, is this will be game #3 for ASU and game #1 for Utah. ASU has been outside on the field longer.

Good point. I've thought about that too. Not only has ASU had a couple games under their belt, but they dropped a ranked opponent, proving their true top 25 status. The Utes still have to make their case, starting with two great teams. Should be a fun game to watch.
