Can't resist this one. You're right Sonny, a few big stretches there. Unmanageable size? I'd say the largest living alumni body in the world managed the size pretty well. Big research schools have their advantages. The resources available to students, on campus and off campus, are incredible.

The UCSB applicant hired every time before the ND applicant? Not if the person doing the hiring is a ND grad, and the chances of that nationally, from Wall Street to LA, are pretty good (as is the case for all of the major D1 schools with great academic reputations and nationally diverse alumni). UCSB is a great school in a great location with a great MDIA lacrosse team. I'm sure UCSB graduates are pretty successful finding jobs in California. The difference is the national reputations and networks of the bigger-name schools.

One of the things people who don't attend major D1 schools miss out on is the amazing college tradition, often revolving around football but not solely limited to football, that a school like Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, etc. have. If you haven't experienced it, it's hard to understand. EVERYONE at those schools knows the fight song, and it means something to them. The alumni are incredibly proud and supportive. It's a lifetime bond. Everyone in the country knows about the school's athletic tradition and (in some cases) academic excellence. You don't have to tell them.

Got a kick out of that line. Most grade schoolers know the fight songs as well. I learned both the Michigan and MSU fight songs in music class in elementary school!!!

I have to agree with you on that one. Even though they are not as big as Michigan or MSU, the fight songs are a big thing at both Eastern and Western Michigan sporting events.

53% of applicants admitted with average GPA of 3.99 is pretty selective. Like all schools UCSB admits more applicants than attend. The freshman class is 3800.

I would say it is also pretty selective if only 10% (3,800) of the total applicants (38,000) actually attend. That would mean that 90% of those that applied to UCSB don't get in for one reason or another.

Just to correct you on your facts CATLAX....it was said earlier that 19.000 out of 38,000 applicants are accepted. Only 3800 actually chose UCSB as their school of choice. That is 53% accepted.

I pasted in what the Office of the Registrar had posted on their website to give folks an idea of what the total cost was to attend UCSB. I was reading through your post fairly quickly since I was at work at the time, so I didn't notice that you were referring to just the tuition. Didn't mean to cause any confusion.

UCSB is a good school. I think it often gets overshadowed by UCLA, USC, UC-Berkeley, and Stanford when folks talk about the academic quality of schools in the state. IMO they can compete very well with these schools, they just don't have the reputation YET in the general public's eye that the others do. Given time they will.
