I wonder if the Nike uniforms are a big draw for recruits. They would be for me.

You would actually select a college based on the lacrosse uniforms? So sad.

Chapman

Postby goneaway on Mon Sep 19, 2005 3:35 pm

Yes, Chapman does have a phenom of a recruiting class. However, have any of you considered the fact that there is a lack of upperclassmen? Their team consists of mainly freshmen and sophomores. Lets make a list of people who left... Metoyer, Goto, Helmsley, and all but one defensive player, plus that long pole is a lsm. I believe that in the next few years chapman will be a contender, but look for them to struggle right out of the blocks in february. Thats just my opinion. any comments?

I have a comment, yeah we are definetly a young team but age can be a very misleading figure. We are definetly going to be a contender this year with our fresh recruting class and are going to be getting even stronger. With our new head coach recruiting like he did, you can expect the incoming classes the next few years to be solid as well. I was suprised one mentiond Mike Clayton, hes a two time all american from oregon and has one of the best shots on the run I have ever seen. Faraneli is a baller as well. On the defense we are lookin solid and will just get better. I'm just excited to see how the season goes.

^^^ Mike Clayton can ball. Lets just say that when people started rumors that he was getting a full ride to Virginia his game was able to convince people.

That is a very interesting rumor. I am not saying Mr. Clayton was not worth a full ride to UVa, however UVa has given a total of 2 full ride scholarship in the Dom Starsia era. He must be good indeed.

Calm Down Pat. I am just saying that it is hard to rebuild after a year when such amazing talent, not only as players but as leaders, depart. I have no doubt Chapman will surprise a few teams, and I am cheering for you guys all the way. And if you can guess who this is i will give you a cookie.

i love stuff like that, you see it a lot in lax-developing regions "that kid has a full ride to princeton!"

*my comment has nothing to do with that individual player.

Scottie,

It is funny how that phrase "so and so is getting a full ride at..." floats around. Dave Cottle mentioned last week that he doesn't have a single kid on his team right now receiving a full scholarship, and that's a team that boasts Joe Walters, the only college kid on Team USA.

What is the scholarship number right now for lacrosse? Is it still 12.6?

If the number is that low it's hard to see anyone being on a full-ride. Figure 30 guys on a roster...a full-ride would account for 8% of your scholarships, while one player would only account 3% of your roster. I would imagine there are very, very few, if any, full-rides offered for lacrosse.

You got one number right. It's still 12.6 for Division 1. However, it's more typical for D1 teams to carry 40 - 45 guys. On a typical top D1 team, probably 30-35 of the guys have some sort of partial scholarship. In extremely rare cases, one or two guys may have a full ride.

To add to the scarcity of scholarships, probably only about 25 of the 57 D1 teams actually have the full allotment of 12.6 scholarships. Most schools don't support lacrosse with the full load. Ivy League schools have zero athletic scholarships (they find other ways to provide aid, but nobody is getting a full). Many D1 programs get by with maybe 6 or 8 scholarships to split up.

Financial aid at Ivy league schools is "need-based" - or at least was when I attended. Certain showing of "Need" will also make one eligible for "work study" jobs - typically overseeing a gym or something similarly non-taxing that are not otherwise available to students without "need".

Also - again when I attended - all the Ivy's calculated your "need" identically so that you would receive the same aid from any Ivy to which you were admitted.

I had heard a rumor that these policies had/were being changed.
