a couple of issues with that...

I am just happy, as a southerner now, that we have indoor plumbing! We only got 'dem washrooms last year. Next year we will have running water in dem ther' water closets and I can assure we'ill be washing our hands. So that's not fair to make the study about us.

Second, percentages are over-rated. If you watch TV, we only have 145 fans at a game so that is really only like 54 people or so. that ain't that bad....

I think what is more outrageous is that there are children 15 years and younger who have never known another team to win the NL East. No matter, the Braves will be out of the playoffs by round 2.

I don't have any witty thing to say, but I know that the funds to research hand washing is such a waste! Be it in a sporting event or be it in an academic building at a college or university or be it at a middle school, I still see guys don't wash their hands. At the place where I work, I see 1/2 of the auto collision & management technology male students do wash their hands, and the other 1/2 don't.

I would feel the same as Sonny if they did that kind of research and say that they would not want to shake hands with a man from Texas.

Ah the handwashing argument.

I hospitals, all sinks have paddle type faucets so that after you wash your hands, you can turn off the water with your elbow or arm and not touch the handle with your hands. More than likely, you will have to touch a door knob or handle if the bathroom is in a public area. Thus you have just rendered useless the soap and water job you did.

To this day, in public restrooms, I dry my hands on the paper towel and then turn off the water using the paper towel. It's habit but after working in a county hospital for over 10 years, I've picked up nothing worse than a common cold.

The whole restroom thing stems from the fact that that's the location where you find sinks. The act of using the toilet is not so much the issue as that one finds himself/herself at a handwashing location. It's much like the teethbrushing thing. Should you brush your teeth everytime you eat; not practical, or make it a habit of brushing in the morning and in the evening at home. We all run around exposing ourselves to bacteria and other nasty little things about every two minutes and one thing we frequently do during the day or night is use the bathroom. So if you wash up everytime, you are getting rid of the things you've come into contact with on a regular basis like TB that the guy before you hacked up all urinal flush lever right before you got there. BTW, normal urine is sterile and is free of bacteria, viruses, and fungus but I don't recommend peeing on your hands.

My guess is that the folks at the Braves game are no more unsanitary than any one else. They probably touch a railing or turnstile that a million others have touched while going into the park. They touch their seats. They touch oft handled money while buy the hot dog. Then they transfer all of this to the bun of the hot dog while shoving it in their mouth. Not to mention the beer cup that got passed down to them by the first five folks in row 12. After 7 beers they get up to go pee. Granted I'd wash my hands at that point but if they don't, it's really nothing to get OCD over.

And yes, I'd shake Sonny's hand and wouldn't give it a thought.

I think the reason the percentages are so high for women is because we're usually in the bathroom with the kids, and the first words out of your mouth as you get out of the stall is, "Now don't forget to wash your hands."
