MDIA Back Up Teams?

Miami recently held tryouts for its USLIA Div. A Club team. They had 60 guys come out, and only took 13 guys. Their new class of guys is pretty sick nasty. Watch out for them in '06.

With so many guys trying out for teams across the MDIA have any of the coaches and/or schools thought about starting up JV club teams? So guys that might have been close to making the MDIA team have a chance to improve in the off-season/in-season? Perhaps have a few practice games against your JV team's even?

Three teams in the LSA are contemplating having JV teams this year for development.

I think you will see more of it in the future as the sport grows.

We plan on having our "extras" play scrimmages with other Division B teams and the other teams that have too many "extras."

We had a B team way back when I played here. We can't do it now because of limitations on field space and coaching, or we probably would. I'm sure those are issues at a lot of schools. I'd love to see our Rec. Sports Department allow a second club team that would compete as more of a traditional club for the kids in school here who didn't want to make the commitment we require, but they won't. There are enough former players and interested athletes on campus here that an IM league would make sense as well, but it hasn't happened yet.

Lindenwood University added a JV team for the upcoming season.

I wish we had field space, and coaching time to do this. We cut around 45 guys including 2 or 3 first team all state players, and our JV squad could probably make a run at a CCLA B title.

Alas, there are only so many nets, and so many coaches willing to put in the time.

I'd like to point out for clarification that Lindenwood has added a "JV" or "B" team for the purpose of providing more students with the opportunity to play.

This team will not be seeking to become eligible for post-season play or awards. They will be playing scrimmages vs. "B" opponents who wish to get in additional games.

Again, this is intended as an opportunity for more people to play and to grow the sport of lacrosse. I would like congratulate those teams who've done this in the past and inspired us to follow suit.

For a couple of seasons now, there's been a lax club team at UofM Business school. They usually play a couple of men's club games and then go to some kind of grad school lax club tournament at Cornell.

Maybe UofM Men's lacrosse should consider marketing this program to players that can't make the cut or can't make the committment to the undergrad team. I know that the B-School team is always looking for players. And there's obviously a market full of kids that aren't right for UofM Lacrosse for one reason or another. Making an announcement about the B-School team at the beginning of tryouts might even been a good way to weed out some kids before tryout even start. That might be helpful especially if tryouts are getting to be unmanageable.

Ferris due to having the whole team back for this season, and having over 35 recruits. Is facing a whole new set of problems. The university pushed to add a B team, since they didn't like the idea of cuts. The team was also apprehensive about cuts. What if players that have been around for 4 yrs don't make the team? The logistics can be a full time job. They went through almost every possibility before deciding a B team was the best decision for everyone.

UCSB has intramural box lacrosse. So any players that don't make the club team can play IM lacrosse. We started box lacrosse last year and it was a big success. A bunch of people from the local city college play and a few of the girls from the women's team. It is full pads with limited contact. Hopefully we can continue it and use it as an alternative to the club team, and maybe even draw some good players from it.
