NCAA Katrina Response

Do you agree with the NCAA requiring all transfers to sit out 1 year if they have transfered to a College or University that offered them admission? I am not sure why the NCAA would make such a ruling, I know they have made exceptions in the past for transfered students (i.e. Baylor basketball players who endured the tragic death of their teammate). I think that college athletics could provide something stable to the student-athletes who have been displaced by Katrina.

I am curious as to where did you hear that information or announcement.

I went to the NCAA website and found the statement made by NCAA at:

Note that the press release date was September 1, 2005. Keep reading until you get to near the very bottom of the press release in which it briefly mentions that NCAA is examining the issue of transfer students.

The reasons why are in the middle of that article:

Brand said the decision was made because the members of some teams, including at least one from Tulane, planned to transfer together to one school. That could lead to the new school taking the entire team as its own, Brand said.

"Let me call that athletic looting, to be provocative, and we won't stand for that," he said.

Some coaches at hurricane-affected schools in and around New Orleans had complained to the NCAA that coaches at other schools had tried to raid their teams and recruit their players, NCAA spokesman Wally Renfro said.

Yep, I found the article after I had heard on ESPN news that NCAA had made this ruling. Thanks for cutting and pasting the article. I am sure it is pretty clear why they made such a ruling. Although it does seem strange they were only concerned with the big money sports like football and basketball ( and hockey, probably less $ involved.)
