The University of Virginia Men's Lacrosse team will face off against the Midshipmen of Navy on October 1st, 2005 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. The men's game will be preceded by a women's game with Old Dominion University facing The College of William and Mary. All proceeds from the games will benefit the family of former Virginia player John Driscoll who succumbed to cancer in 2002. Driscoll, a standout player, was a member of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

The women's game starts at 12:30 and will feature two Colonial Athletic Association teams. William and Mary, under Coach Tara Brown, ended last season nationally ranked at #16. Since Brown's tenure as coach started she has had five student athletes earn All American honors. Old Dominion plays one of the toughest schedules in women's lacrosse, under Coach Sue Stahl, one of the most decorated coaches in the women's game. Stahl has been the coach of the Lady Monarchs for 15 seasons and has well over 100 wins. She will be preparing a young ODU team for the 2006 season.

Women's Teams

The men's game will begin at 5 PM and will feature two of the top teams in the country. Both teams were in the NCAA Men's lacrosse tournament in 2005 with Navy losing to Virginia in the quarter final round and Virginia playing in the Final Four at Lincoln Financial Field. The game brings two of the top coaches in the sport, Richie Meade of Navy and Dom Starsia of Virginia to the Sportsplex. Meade, the Navy coach since 1995, has revitalized the program and brought the Midshipmen to the last two NCAA tournaments. Starsia, with well over 200 wins, has guided his Virginia team to the NCAA tournament Final Four three of the last four years. His Cavalier teams won the NCAA championships in both 1999 and 2003.

A highlight of this year's event will be a clinic for youth players prior to the game. Navy and Virginia players will participate in a short training session. Hampton Roads Youth League players will be able to benefit from this direct contact with the Virginia and Navy players. Virginia brings four 2005 All Americans with Attackman Matt Ward, Midfielder Kyle Dixon and Defenders Michael Culver and Steve Holmes. Navy will also come with four All Americans from the 2005 season with Goalie Matt Russell, the Midfield brother combination of Steve and Billy Looney and Attackman Jon Birsner.

Funds raised from this event will go to support the family of John Driscoll. Over 4,000 people attended last year's event which supported the children of former Navy player Kevin Bianchi and his crewmember Peter Ober who were killed in a Navy helicopter accident. The John Driscoll Memorial Fund

John Driscoll was a University of Virginia midfielder who passed away in 2002 after a valiant battle with a brain tumor. He left behind his loving wife, Kara, and triplet sons, John, Patrick and Ryan. The boys turned four this past June. John's career included High School All American honors (1976 Manhasset High School), Second Team All American Honors in 1979 and First Team All American Honors in 1980 while playing at the University of Virginia. He was inducted into the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1998. In addition to these honors John played on the winning World Team in both 1982 and 1986.

John encompassed all the characteristics you would expect of a world class athlete. He not only loved the game of lacrosse he loved the common bond that forms among lacrosse players. John always felt it was important to give back to the game and help to teach younger players so that they would learn to love the game he so loved.

Now it is our turn to give back to John. Due to his medical condition he was unable to obtain life insurance. This trust was set up to benefit his children. 100% of the monies raised will be donated to this fund. Your purchase of a ticket or a donation through the Hampton Roads Chapter of US Lacrosse will make a difference for these three young boys.
