Mascot Ruling

Non-lacrosse specific topics.

I am reading a quote from Kirk Bohls with the Austin American-Statesman on the NCAA's postseason ban of American Indian mascots:

"It's only a matter of time until PETA gets involved, and then it's goodbye Longhorns, Tigers and Bears, oh, my."

What a hot-button topic we are discussing.

Too late, PETA writes a letter to the University of South Carolina requesting that we change our mascot (Gamecocks) because it promotes the sport of cockfighting. They probably do the same thing with the University of Delaware Blue Hens...

Dan Wish.....She's right.

Thanks Tim, for the history lesson on Custer. you dont rise to General by making sure the horses are washed correctly.

-Chief Joseph was Nez Perce. He led his tribe (tried to anyway) from Wyoming/Utah/Nevada trying to flee to Canada so they wouldnt get massacred too.

-maybe you should work on your sarcasm, cuz your references to native Americans and African-American studies arent the nicest. but hey, what can we expect from someone in South Carolina? you guys still fly the confederate flag. maybe we'll see you in a gray suit after S.C. leads the secession again.

LEARN YOUR HISTORY PEOPLE!

Nice one...seems that the only group of people who it's politically correct to make fun of remains the southerners.

So because I went to USC, you assume that I agree with the confederate flag, am stupid (or at least don't know how to use sarcasm correctly), and support the "south will rise again" cause.

Now who's being prejudiced?

One thing is to treat everyone equally. Instead of coming back with some sort of proof you insult me. I'd appreciat it if you learned your history, since although you did correct me about Chief Joseph, you incorrectly identified the tribe that had to suffer through the Trail of Tears. 1 and 1 I guess.

This nation is a melting pot. As such, everyone is afforded the same rights, and those with a skin color outside of white shouldn't be allowed extra to make up for something that happened 100 years ago.

all i have to say is that i think that Notre Dame needs to change thier mascot because i am Irish and i take offense that they are the "Fighting Irish" i find that offensive to my backround, so if Indians find schools named after tribs or indian warriors then Notre Dame needs to change thier name too

At least your Nebraska school isn't called "Bugeaters" when it was first proposed many years ago before your school became the Cornhuskers. I know lil lady lax fan brought up a very long list of schools whose nicknames were dropped because most of these schools dropped their varsity teams, etc.

You can get clothing with the "Bugeaters" logo and name. I'm picking up a polo shirt for my dad for christmas (U of N class of '43). One thing I can say for Nebraskans, they have a sense of humor when it comes to their mascots!!

First of all I think the NCAA over stepped its boundaries. They should not be allowed tell a school whether or not they can use their mascot in the post season. There are kids that go to games to see the mascot. I think that is important. I would also like to think that schools would be socially responsible for their mascots and what they represent. It has been mentioned that some mascot are done in respect of the local area and there are great relations between the school and that group. There are also schools who have mascots that are completely inappropriate. You might look to the Rebels of Mississippi with their use of the Confederate flag, definitely the Redskins, Chief Wahoo of the Cleveland Indians (former hats might not have been best depiction of the Native Americans), and many of the others that might come to mind. I would like to use the old Hawaiian Warrior as an example. This mascot just yelled at insults at players. It was clearly out of line. It is important to note this is a sensitive issue, and it is different for every school. I am not condemning any school or team's mascot with the exception of the Redskins for obvious reasons. That being said all school's need to think about what their mascot represents and if they are happy with that image.

I have nothing of real worth to add to this thread other then a Iowa-Nebraska joke.

Q: Why do the trees in Iowa bend to the west?

A: Because Nebraska sucks and Illinois blows.

Ok, back to our normal conversation on a real topic.

You know, from a meteorological standpoint you should reverse that and have the trees leaning east. That would also take into account the anti-cyclonic nature of the tornadoes that pass through that area. Of course you know where all the hot air for said weather formations would have to come from--the monkeys in the middle!!! :D

(I know, I'm overthinking this. Oh well, thems the breaks! Good joke BTW)

Seems that the NCAA isn't the only one that is taking on this topic right now. Now NORAD has gotten into the mix:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/08/11/NORAD/index.html

I personally think that the NCAA has gone way to far. They need to spend their time fixing the other problems that face college athletics; horrible graduation rates and academic fraud, boosters, etc. There are bigger issues out there.

On a side note, the NCAA has banned Utes, Seminoles, etc. but they are fine with the Aztecs(San Diego State)??? Makes you wonder...

What about some cars? Would the automobile industry fall in line, too?

It would be so dull, so bland if we just say those cheers, "Go Nebraska" or "Go Iowa" or "Go Baylor" without any reference to our mascots.

I think Gonzaga is safe for now. Although our mascot is the Bulldogs, we chant "Let's go Zags" or "Go Zags." Something with "Zags." Oh, and don't ask me what a "Zag" is.

When I was at Eastern we used to do a cheer using the initials. Eastern could use that as a surrogate mascot--I don't know how they would feel about being called the EMUs though!!

Heard on SportCenter earlier that the Seminoles will be able to keep their name, or at least NCAA is thinking of letting them keep theirs. Seems the actually Seminoles have no problem with their name being used.
