LEAGUE CITY — Once the high school football season comes to a end in November — or December for those lucky enough to play deep into the playoffs — players will put away their uniforms and look for something else to keep them busy and in shape.
They might play basketball, soccer, powerlifting or track. But if Mike Ormsby has his way, more athletes, especially football players, will give lacrosse a try.
That’s right. Lacrosse.
The sport, which is popular in the northeast, is seen by many in these parts as a “soft” sport better suited for people with names like Tad or Muffy, but Ormsby, the men’s lacrosse coach at the University of Houston, said that’s far from the truth.
“People see it as a silver-spoon sport, a yuppie sport, but it’s not,” he said. “You need to be a man to play this sport. If you’re a boy and you want to play the sport, it’s not a girly-girl sport.”
Ormsby grew up in the northeast where the sport is popular with football players.
“If you played football in high school, you played lacrosse in high school,” he said. “Conversely, down here in Texas, if you play football, you run track in the spring.
