i've got a couple questions...how was this team chosen? can just anyone try-out or sign up? this is a trip i'd love to be a part of before i graduate..and i was wondering if i could get some more information for future reference. if this tournament is happening again at a later date, how would i or anyone else iterested be able to be a part of it?

USA West happens every year. Most of the team is put together by the coaches for that year. Get recognized and they'll holla at your coach.

When I went in 2002, I left school early. I took my finals 6 weeks into the term. It was a pain, but it was more than worth it.

It was $3K last year for 3 weeks (2 weeks in Japan, 1 in China), but it jumped to $3.5K this year for a little over 2 weeks in Japan.
I'm sure that the costs vary based on flight cost, hotel costs, etc. It also pays for a ton of equipment and clothing as well as various activities/sightseeing. The coaches' trips are paid for which is probably part of the reason that it was more this time around with 4 coaches, a director, and a trainer (last year it was only Flip and DeMonte as coaches, no trainer).
Definitely worth every penny though if you're able to swing it, it was an experience of a lifetime.

I also took finals early too go on this years trip. For those of you on the quarter system, it is do-able. I managed to take my finals 2 weeks early at a UC and somehow got good grades. It was a ton of work, and I had to study (read: play video games) while my friends were out partying sometimes. But it was all worth it to be a champion ASPAC'er. Great Time, great players, great coaches.

Not that they're club players, but when USA West went to Japan last summer, Princeton was there representing east coast lax and played in the same tournament as us. It was a pretty cool experience practicing on the field next to them and then watching them play Team Japan in the international friendship games.
For the most part they were pretty friendly, but I've never seen so many pastel colored lacoste polos, khaki pants, and topsider boat shoes before. I was a little intimidated to meet Coach Tierney after witnessing him nearly hemmorage a blood vessel in his neck when his team was losing to Japan in the first quarter, but he turned out to be pretty nice and was interested in our team and players.

I love my Princeton Tigers, obviously the pre-pre-preseason trip abroad didn't help them this year. There's always next year.
Think of the East stars you could put on the team, so many are All Americans. Farquhar from VA, Davis from MD, Combs from MD, Archibald from MD. If you could sneak those kids away from USA West it could be nice. Alot of the Michigan boys are from the East coast, most of FSU and Va Tech, Ga Tech.
Cunningham for CSU from Mass.
Algozer for Ga Tech from NY
Paustian for FSU from NY
Ashenfelter for BC from NJ
Cook for Northeastern from NY
Kosyjana for Va Tech from MD
Not to mention the other rising freshmen and sophomores that can make AA next year. Mixed in with a few D1, D3 boys, it could be a solid team.
Does anyone know where next year's tournament will be?
