Two interesting TV phenomenon

Are we tired of re-runs? No exciting TV shows? All of our favorite pro sports' seasons are over. All we are left with are MLL games on ESPN.

Imagine a TV show was rated second to the game 7 of the NBA finals. That show was not a re-run nor a new TV series. That was Dancing with the Stars on ABC. It received a rating of 10.4 with 11,360,00 households tuned in on Wednesdays at 9 pm EST/8 pm CST during the week of June 20-26. Next week, it will be a final showdown on the floor between John/Charlotte and Kelly/whatever that guy's name is.

Another interesting TV phenomenon is from WB- Beauty and the Geek. The information I have is probably about 2 weeks old. The first 3 weeks, 3.8 million viewers tuned in to watch this program pairing a beauty and the geek. The age group that watch this program ranges from 12 to 34. I have read the Beauty and the Geek message board in which most people have said that Richard is annoying or grating, yet they like him because he was so entertaining. Mindi, his partner, is really S-M-A-R-T.

Any take on why everyone is so enamored with both shows. Is it because both provide something new and origniality? Is it because both provide something for us to get things off our minds?

I myself cannot fathom why these shows are that popular. When I get the chance to watch the tube, I usually just surf the overplayed HBO movies or tune into sports center on occasion. However, I will say this. I have notcied that mostly females watch this kind of stuff. Whenever I go over my friend's house, his mom and sister are glued to the set if those shows are on. My mom also enjoys watching these programs as well.

Maybe families sit down to enjoy that crap b/c it's basically the only non-sensored program that people of varying ages can watch together and "somewhat" enjoy it. Dad and mom are not going to have a burning desire to watch Sponge Bob (or whatever it is that kids watch), and little johnny ain't gonna wanna see the new episode of CSI. I guess these shows provide a (I use this term loosely) "happy" median.
