I'll second that one! I know Michigan fans consider it a winning season if they beat the Buckeyes.

Another great football rivalry is Nebraska vs Oklahoma. They've been going for each others throats since the turn of LAST century! (Go Huskers!)

For all sports competition it has to be Dook-North Carolina. They sit eight miles apart and compete in 30 sports.

A friend of mine went to NC State. She told me the UNC-NC State games are also pretty intense.

I would take Texas-OU over that one in a second. Granted OU has won the last 5 years, the hate between these two schools is pretty good.

No question about that! In the future, er, maybe far future, it will be great to have Texas-OU lacrosse rivalry. Right now, I know there is no lacrosse team at OU based on my email conversation with its Intramural Department.

You would think with all the Dallas kids alone who go to school there that they could get something going.

I know the dynamics have changed a bit since they split the league into two groups. As a Cornhusker fan it only makes sense to me that Texas would hate OU, doesn't everybody??

Rivalries

Postby BenchCaptain16 on Wed Jun 29, 2005 2:55 pm

These are the top rivalries in my opinion.

NCAA Basketball - UNC vs Duke hands down
NCAA Footbball - 1. Michigan vs OSU (they have produced the best games in recent history)2. Army vs Navy (pure tradition) 3. USC vs Notre Dame (notre dame needs to start holding up their end of the bargain)

NCAA Lacrosse - Cuse vs Princton

USLIA Lacrosse - CSU vs UCSB, anyone vs CSU...

btw Florida vs Florida state is a great rivarly but not even top 5

For all sports rivalry you are dead wrong. There may be single sport rivalries that are older or more intense, but for all sports, Florida/FSU is easily in the top 5:

1) UNC-Dook
2) OSU-Mich
3) Army-Navy
4) USC-UCLA
5) Florida-FSU
The intensity of the rivalry between those schools may even be greater than USC-UCLA, but I'll give the West Coast rivalry the benefit of the doubt.

I agree with most of your list but I would take Texas-OU over this, granted I lived in Texas most my life but I got to live it so I know all about it.

No matter what, you are going to get big rivalries and they are going to be biased. For instance, Iowa-Iowa State is HUGE for the state of Iowa. (I said for the state, no where on the national scene to people care about this) Since there are no pro teams, the people in the state live and breath Hawkeye and Cyclone stuff. Aaron could chime in here, but the whole state of Iowa is in Ames or Iowa City the day of football/basketball games. Hell, we got our best attendance ever my senior year in our game against Iowa State. My first of two wrestling matches I ever went to was Iowa-Iowa State.

Except me...I'm a Nebraska fan.

You are right, though. People in this state do live and breathe one school or the other...when they're doing well. When both schools suck, I never hear anything about them.

LSU vs. Tulane

It was a great football rivalry back in the day and is now a great baseball rivalry.

On the lacrosse front, they have been playing each other since the 70's and back then somehow they were able to play at Tulane stadium (site of Superbowl IV).

Here's an interesting thought to ponder: now that more teams are playing OOC do you think that new rivalries will be developing? If so, which would you foresee or like to see?
