What is this "NHL" of which you speak? :D

As I inferred in my previous post, nowdays our players are required to be actually admitted to SDSU, this has not always been the case in the past. I am not going to make any excuses for this years's record, other than we did play a highly ranked schedule. This year we lost to USD, last year we were 1 and 1 against USD. This coming year's USD /SDSU game isn't going to be played or decided on a message board. I hope your wishes come true. When I started with SDSU in 1998 we had 13 players, this year we had 28 when the season started. I cannot take any credit for the years before that. This coming year we are expecting a larger roster, we will see when the time comes, we also are looking forward to the time that USD doesn't want to see us coming on a regular basis.

NCAA football coaches would love to get rid of any rules actually requiring the players to attend the school, but for now they're settling for having them admitted without them being required to attend classes or do any work.

Okay, I'm exagerating. It's not that way at all schools. However, I'm sure a lot of coaches would rather just worry about athletes and not student-athletes.

Is that a gauntlet being dropped?? A "you may have beat us this year but just wait until next year when we trounce you?" If so, I may have to take a trip down San Diego way to see how things turn out...

Good luck Coach Miller. I hope you have a good bunch of recruits.

I didn't hear anything being dropped, I just heard the wishes of a USD alum that his team would be considered the underdog. I know better than to underestimate Coach MacFarlane and any of his teams.

Ya. I wish we had ToddyMac back when I played. Don't get me wrong, Schmitty is one of my all time favorite derelicts, but our team could have learned a LOT from Todd. Norm came to USD the year after I graduated, so I missed his expertise as well (thankfully I got to work with him when I volunteered as an assistant a few years ago). I can't wait to see how we fair in the WCLL A Division next year. My magic 8-ball says somewhere in the middle of the pack, under UCSD and U of A, but above ASU and SDState.

But that's just one man's opinion.

PS. Another thing I miss about SDSU Lax was their sponsorship by Karl Strauss brewery... yummy!

sorry vtech guy. but there is simply no way the FSU players look forward to a game against VT than they do a game against UF. UF-FSU is the biggest rivalry in college sports, sorry to burst your bubble.

Yes, the football game between #14 FSU and an unranked Florida team HAS to be the biggest rivalry ever and of all time.... NOT!

guess the army-navy game is meaningless as well.

i don't necessarily agree with tampalax either though, any true gator fan knows that our biggest rivals are uga and tennessee.

And what the hell has Washington done in football lately? Does that mean the Wassu/ Wash. game is meaningless too?

rivlaries

Postby Dan Wishengrad on Wed Jun 29, 2005 12:05 am

I never claimed ours was the best rivalry, or that others weren't good rivalries... simply responded to the absolute, blanket statement that FSU-UF is the greatest in all of college sports. There are many traditional rivlaries that compare to the ones mentioned.

My vote for the best football rivalry over the years is USC-Notre Dame.

In all these years I have coached, the biggest rival games I have seen are:

South Carolina vs Clemson Div. A
New Mexico vs Ft. Lewis Mid 90's
New Mexico vs Texas Tech Mid 90's
Colorado Mines vs Northern Colorado Division B
Winthrop vs Furman Div. B
Winthrop vs The Citadel Div. B
Liberty vs Southern Virginia Div. B
Liberty vs Elon Div B
These games have been some of the most intense I have seen as a Coach on the winning and losing side. They continue to be great matchups in the USL MDIA and in all College sports.

The three best ones for me are Winthrop upsetting Furman in Winthrop's first season in 2001. Winthrop and Furman both being from SC and being small Schools had a good rival thing going for several years.Winthrop beating The Citadel 8-3 in 2002 after losing to The Citadel in the 2001 season 19-5. Citadel could not figure out my Zone defense to save their life. Citadel also being from SC made it a big rival game for Winthrop. But the best rival game for me was played in a packed Williams Stadium in front of several thousand fans in 2004 after being down to Southern Virginia 6-1 and coming back to beat them 11-10 in overtime. Both Southern Virginia and Liberty are close to each other along with being in state rivals in Virginia. They are on the far end of the SELC spectrum and that makes them big rivals. Also the 2005 win for Liberty in front of a large crowd over Elon 7-6 was a great game after losing to Elon in 2004 14-3 and in 2003 16-1. Elon is also close to Liberty around nearby Greensboro, NC.

These are only my experience coaching in the USL MDIA but the best two College rivals I think are Michigan and Ohio State. That is one hot Football ticket if your are lucky enough to get tickets see Michigan play Ohio State. In NCAA Div. 1 Lacrosse I would say Maryland vs Johns Hopkins is a very intense game and no love lost there. Also Hopkins vs Syracuse is a big rival game in Lacrosse. On the USL MDIA DIV. A level is Arizona vs BYU and BYU vs Colorado State along with Florida vs Florida State and Texas vs Texas A&M to me are the biggest games in the USL MDIA and let's not froget Cal vs Sonoma State or UCSB vs Sonoma State.
