Lacrosse programs grow and seek varsity status

The popularity of lacrosse is growing by leaps and bounds around the Twin Cities metro area. There were 300 boys and girls competing in Bloomington's youth and high school lacrosse programs this past spring.

And lacrosse is just as big in nearby Eden Prairie and other surrounding suburban communities.

The Minnesota State High School League's Representative Assembly approved girls lacrosse as a sanctioned varsity sport in the fall of 2001. Eden Prairie took advantage of that ruling and added girls lacrosse to its extensive list of varsity sports programs.

However, high school boys lacrosse is still waiting for its sanction from the MSHSL.

Did you notice that, according to ESPN's NCAA championships broadcast, it's already been approved by the Minnesota State HS League? They listed 6 states that had approved it since some date (1999?), and they listed Minnesota even though the vote failed this spring.

The girls side did, and I think thats why there was confusion.
