Pre-season AA

Postby CATLAX MAN on Mon Jan 24, 2005 9:30 pm

I came across the list that I had posted on the old board on this topic, so I thought I'd post it again with some edits. We had a pretty good discussion going on this before it got way off topic and then the board went down.

The criteria for making this list was based on results from the prior year during the regular season and at the National Tourney that I personally saw and should also be playing again this year. Obviously, it is not all-inclusive, but I think you'd be hard pressed to come up with a better list. My revised Division A preseason AA list (if there were such a thing) would be as follows (in no particular order):

Attack

Wilson - UCSB
Stanitz-Harper - CSU
Metoyer - Chapman
Romanchuk - FSU
Dean - UCSD
(Hier - BYU would make this list if he wasn't on mission this year)

Midfield

Patton - UCSB
Farquhar - CSU
Wiley - Sonoma
Tschaggeny - BYU
Paustian - FSU
Gal - Michigan
Isaksen - UCSB
Coffman - Oregon

LSM

Conklin-Moragne - UCSB

Defense

Parmalee - AZ
Price - CSU
Towers - UCSB
Cannis - Sonoma
Yuen - SFU

Goalie

Brittain - UCSB
Cordova - Oregon

I would add Binge from Oakland at attack among others. I still argue that Jokisch had a better season and is a better athlete/ball stopper than both Cordova and Brittain, but that is a biased opinion.
Always on point . . .

As for GRLC, first name that comes to mind is Illinois midfielder Jason Sutherland. Beast on face-offs and good offensive and defensive midfielder. I could see Illinois challenging Missouri for the top spot in GRLC.

In goal watch for Jon Dean from Michigan State. 2 time all CCLA (first team last year) in his senior year. He also has a better supporting D in front of him this year with the transfer in of Chris Zolkower (Wheeling Jesuit) and the return of former all CCLA Mike Keenan after a year off.

On attack in the CCLA the entire Oakland attack could be first team all americans (not all at once, but they all have that kind of talent). Watch out for Binge to not even lead his team in scoring this year. (not a knock on binge, just watch out for the others on his team, especially Brams).

There is also a young attackman from Indiana (McMannus i believe) who is the real deal. It's not common for sophomores to be AA, especially with the strong attack in the USLIA, but watch out for this kid in the years to come.

Senior Middie Eric Weitz of Washington deserves mention. He has been voted to the PNCLL All-Stars (first-team) two consecutive seasons, and always seems to be at his best in big games against the top defenders assigned to try to shut him down. It's tough for players from teams outside the Top-25 to get "the pub" that the marquee programs get, but Weitz is a great example of one deserving of All-American consideration.

I must echo the support for Billy Binge. UMD has played against Wilson and Metoyer, and while those players deserve their first team ranking Binge is every bit as good as those two outstanding players. I would vote him first team AA, Wilson/Metoyer, Romanchuk (the best at moving with out the ball of the five) along with S-H from CSU.

I DON'T THINK JOE CAN HANDLE THE PRESSURE THAT COMES WITH BEING AN ALL AMERICAN. TOWBEY KASSA WAS NEVER ON THAT LIST BECAUSE OF THE HIGH SCHOOL HE WENT TO, AND OPERON UNFORTUNATELY WENT TO SCHOOL VERY CLOSE TO TOWBEY'S.

BINGE FOR PRESIDENT!
