USLIA.com database: Comments/Suggestions?

Postby Sonny on Fri Jun 10, 2005 11:16 am

For those of you that used the online database this past season - What did you like/dislike about the system? What features would you change/add for next year?

Trying to do some planning this off-season. Thanks.

If you are referring the statistics database, the only thing I can think of adding is an entry for number of games played. I saw a few other people mention this too. I know that the stats were thrown off sometimes because some players didn't play in every game that was entered into the system (in our case, we had a game that was forefeited and it skewed all our players' averages). Overall, I like the database how it is. It's very easy to enter/edit games and stats.

Any way t make sure that ALL games get put in. Myself and another Minensota player would have been in the top 10 in points if they were, but then again maybe other people didn't put in ALL of their stats too. I say get rid of home team does it if after 2 weeks or something it isn't in.

There are two main problems with that as far as I can tell and Sonny can elaborate on it differently, which he probably will.

The biggest problem is that the MDIA cannot force teams to enter stats into this site. Although this site is terrific and Sonny does an amazing job (get premium membership and support the site), it is not "officially" associated with the USL MDIA. This site remains an invaluable tool for teams to communicate and find games or sometimes quick answers to questions. It is almost even better for alumni to stay in tune with things going on and to give their opinion on matters. It is not necessary for teams to look at this site or to be a member of it.

Another problem is that if you open it up for every team to enter the game and not just the home team then you will have a lot of duplication. Even if you open it up after two weeks there still remains the chance that there could be duplication.

The best solution that I can think of is for the MDIA body to make mandatory the entering of games into uslmdia.org or whatever that site is and for Sonny to be allowed to tap into it and bring all of those games nationally into uslia.

Could each league designate a person to enter stats, maybe once a week, for the games played that week? The individual teams would be responsible for getting their stats to that person. That way you avoid redundant data entry and can eliminate the home team portion.

I know the WCLL is very good about posting details on their games, especially the scores. Those usually go up within a few hours of the game being completed. Sometimes it takes longer for the stats but I think that's because they have to wait for the teams to turn those in.

I did notice that the leagues that had websites were really good about keeping their stats current.

The leagues, as far as I know, do not have a single individual typing in all the stats. It is a tedious, time consuming task for each team to do their own stats, let alone the entire conference.

A possibility. Tedious and time-consuming doesn't bother me, especially after what I went through for my daughter's science fair and California Mission projects...

I have to admit to being unfamiliar with the stats-gathering process but I'd be willing to help out.

I nominate Johnny Erickson aka Gopherlax29 to enter the stats for the UMLL. I know he can handle it, he is kind of a computer geek.

Let me warn you guys, it is VERY time consuming to take it all on yourself. I used to do it for the PCLL teams, back when we only had 11 and back when I was in college and had all the time in the world to do it (lacrosse was prioritized over class) and I spent probably four hours every day doing it.

Gregg is right that it is quite time-consuming, and Sonny has done it all mostly himself over the years for USLIA.com. :)

I kind of figured it would be more than a couple of hours a week. I usually spend a few hours a night online, usually reading the uslia boards :) or doing research. I'd still be willing to donate my time.

Maybe another option would be to have a few volunteers in each league. Each volunteer would be responsible for the stats of a certain number of teams in that league. A division of duty, but still less chaotic and time-consuming for Sonny.
