The fastest growing sport in the country is America's first sport, and Durango is catching on.
"This is the first year that we've had a Fort Lewis team and a Durango team," said Four Corners Lacrosse Cup founder John Robinette on Saturday.
The Fort Lewis College alumni team, or Fort Lax (lax is slang for lacrosse), and the Durango Dawgs are a combined 5-1 after Day 1 of the two-day tournament.
The Robinette-coached Fort Lax are 3-0 and have already clinched a fourth-place finish at the least - their best in four years of the cup's standing.
"This is definitely the best our team has looked," said Robinette, who scored the game's first goal of the 8-5 win over the Arizona Burn in Game 3.
Fort Lax plays Breakaway Sports (2-0) at 10:30 a.m. today at Fort Lewis College for a chance at the semifinals, which will be played at 1:30 p.m.

Durango Lax making strides
By Aaron Unterreiner

Teams Durango were again denied a championship game appearance at the Four Corners Lacrosse Cup, but Fort Lewis Lax and the Durango Dawgs did secure their best finishes ever at the fourth annual tournament.
Relatively new to Southwest Colorado, lacrosse has not only gained momentum in participation (Durango has four teams, including youth programs in Durango and Ignacio) but success, as well.
"I'm just amazed at its growth," said John Randle, the coach of the Dawgs and the FLC club team. "It's been extremely competitive. Of course, it's the same two teams in the championship - that's not very satisfying. I would've liked to see a Durango-based team in it. But, over time, it'll grow. We'll be a force to be reckoned with."
Fort Lewis Lax and Durango finished the tournament a combined 6-4. Fort Lewis Lax lost its semifinal game to last year's champion Team Gold Bond of Denver. Durango lost its semifinal game to this year's champion Breakaway of Denver.
Breakaway defeated Gold Bond 8-7 in Sunday's championship game at Fort Lewis College.

when we played them they only had a couple CSU kids playing with them... they did however have like 20 subs to our 5 and it was our third game of the day and they only beat us by 1 or 2.
