NCAA lax tourney

Postby Brent Burns on Mon May 02, 2005 11:10 am

Yes, the USLIA National Championships is in the driver's seat for all of us, but we all know that we will be paying attention to the selection of NCAA Div 1 playoff teams come Sunday, May 8. Who do you all think will be in the top 4? I would not be surprised that it will be JHU, Duke, Virginia and Cornell rounding out the top 4.

What bothers me about the NCAA men's lax tourney is Cornell. In the USILA poll, Cornell is ranked #3 and Townson is #11, yet in this tourney, it is the way around where Towson is seeded #7 and Cornell isn't. The Big Red has a perfect 6-0 Ivy League record plus is 6-0 at home. Explain this logic to me that Maryland and Towson are seeded whereas Cornell isn't.

Anyway as for the first round winners:

JHU (Kyle will be explosive, he has 18 g, 17 a with 35 points)
Syracuse
Duke
Maryland (close one if the Nittany Lions keep Joe Walters under wraps)
Virginia
Navy
G'town
Cornell (I'm seeing Red)
Syracuse (a close one)

Hopkins' late goal to tie and the game winning goal was #1 on Sportscenter's Top 10 plays of the night. Also some nice game coverage of that game including the ref checking the stick. No highlights though for the Duke game.

When Duke was up 8-1, I knew it was a foregone conclusion for the Terps.

I had to miss the original broadcast of the Duke-Maryland game. From what I saw of the game during the storm delay it looks like JHU has their work cut out for them tomorrow.

For those not able to make it to Philly, the championship game is being broadcast on ESPN (not ESPN2) at Noon Eastern time. That's 9 am for us left-coasters. At least that's what Charter has listed for my area.

Hopkins takes another 9-8 game. Gotta be nice to not play your best and still win a national title.

One thing Hopkins escelled at this year was winning all of their close games, including several OT's. Early in the first it looked like Duke was going to do to JHU what they did to MD, give up the first goal and then pile on a bunch. They kept getting great looks right in front of the crease and the Hopkins D looked confused. Whatever they did in the second half helped a lot, and it's amazing how much a goalie making saves can help a team!
Congrats to the Blue Jays. If they didn't do it this year they were toast. Also, I can't believe Kyle Harrison - great as he is - missed an open goal! Obn the other hand, Kyle showed the power of versatility as he scored two great goals, one leftie and one rightie, both very hard shots.
Duke looks loaded for the future, I think they'll be around for a while.

I think Hopkins made a lot of good adjustments in the second half regarding the defense. They cut down on the Duke fast break and also slide early while Duke became stale on offense. Too much sitting around watching the guy with the ball take his man iso and no off-ball movement. Just killed them in the second half.

Four of the five men's championship lacrosse games for 2005 were decided by one goal, a great year for championship lacrosse.
The UCSB win was similar to the Hopkins game. Both winning teams trailed by a couple of goals early in the second half but came back to go ahead by one and shut down their opponents with great second half defense.
Congratulations to Johns Hopkins, Salsbury St, NYIT, UCSB and USD. 2005 was a great year. Looking forward to 2006.

Congratulations to JHU, the Hopkin faithful, and Petro for winning the title. The JHU coaching staff made a heckuva job of making adjustments for the second half and really shut down the Duke O for about 24 minutes. I agree with some folks that Duke was sitting on the ball too much in the 2nd half while the Blue Jays kept fighting for every possession and kept pushing the ball hard to get its first lead late in the 4th quarter. It is not only Kyle who was amazing, but it was also Greg Peyser, Rabil (I found it interesting and exciting that he has 85% hearing loss in his left ear, way to go, Rabil!) who made things happen as Greg did well on GBs and face-offs.

However, I know Duke will get back in the title game next year with those amazing attack and middies. I would not be surprised to see Matt Dankowski work harder in the off-season. Kudos to Duke, too for its outstanding season.
