such a dramatic flag throwing motion.

i have always suspected that d1 guys got away with crazy stick cheats, you would see them at camps with huge bags on their sticks or hi wall ball stops.

i dont' know if d1 coaches looked at is as bush league to call stick checks or what, but that stick is ridiculous.

Just read The Swami's "This Week..." as of May 24, 2005, and this person had something to say about the illegal check and ESPN's coverage of what the ref had to say. I pretty much suspected that The Swami made up that one, but it was hilarious to read what he said about the ref and about the ESPN announcer.

The link works, but I'm not getting any content, just a splash screen.

Anyway, locally at the HS level I've seen an explosion in coach-reqeusted equipment checks over the past 2.5 weeks (5 games with 3+ checks requested) and in every game it's come back to bite the first coach who asked for one square in the butt. They request, the other coach "retaliates" and ends up getting a longer EMO and/or scoring a lot more goals during the EMO.

Yes, the MD player was saying that it was legal at the start of the game.
That only trails the "I bought it that way!" argument. Sorry, put the STX rep in the penalty box for 3 min.
The number of illegal sticks seems to be spiking this year, even with just the 1st and 3rd checks. Did a HS game last week - 3 out of 4 were tossed for 3 min. ea. Tsk-tsk.

You mean that's not really 12 inches??

I actually had one stick that was less than 6! I'm pretty lenient on my measurements - 3 min. NR is kind of like the death penalty. It's amazing how few goals have actually been scored in those situations though.

I believe Lindenwood did not score on one against Colorado in the first round.

we had a weird situation this past season in a game vs. auburn where our goalie had been using a stick that had a bent shaft in the 1st half of the game and the auburn coach saw this. so we knew it was illegal so we had our goalie switch sticks at half. well it got to the beginning of the 4th quarter with UT up something close to 8-2 and their coach was in search of sort of spark for their team, so he decided to ask for a stick check on our goalies stick that was laying on the sideline (which he had used in the 1st half). it suprised me that this was legal to do, that you can request a stick check for any stick that is on or around the field/sidelines. netherless they didn't score on the 3 min. man up with our backup goalie being our starting attackmen. has anyone else seen this before??

While unusual, it definitely is within the rules, so you've got to be careful with any trick sticks lying around. That said, very few times have coaches called for a stick check separate from the quarter break, and i've never had one ask for a stick in the bench area.
On another point though, I'm surprised more coaches don't use this as a "free" time-out, since they are allowed one stick check with no penalty even if the stick is legal. On a second request where it is legal then they are charged a timeout. (I hope I haven't opened a can of game-delaying worms here! )

Ran into Coach Cottle today here in Philly at the Marriott and he had some interesting things to say about the illegal stick situation. I'll fill in after this weekend's games are over.

One of my old coaches use to joke around saying if you ever want a good long time out when you are out of them, call a stick check on a goalie stick as half the time, the refs have to meet up to remember what are the rules regarding a goalie stick to figure everything out. Never actually seen it done.

The full video is great because you see Mcglone on the sideline flipping out after the ruling and you see the refs laughing to each other.
