Field players opinions on Goalie Gear

The year that we first saw the "Air Gait" (1989?) was also the first time I noticed a D1 goalie (Matt Palum-Syracuse) wearing anything but sweats or shorts, as he wore SU's orange football pants without padding. I still chuckle about how stupid it looked. Of course, they did get a ring that year. If a goalie feels he has a mental edge because he's wearing some shin guards or football pants, then I guess it's up to him...but ring or no ring, they should expect the jeers.

Looking back though, the sweatpants I wore playing goalie (with the elastic cuff pulled up over the knee with the rest hanging down to mid calf) were probably as silly looking to someone else...oh, well.

I'm down for goalies wearing sweat pants that are rolled up. I would think a goalie would greatly desire sweat pants for playing on astro turf.

Side note, my goalie in high school wore sweat pants for every game with one leg rolled up higher than the other. He also took us to two state championship games his two years as a starter.

Jordan can mock goalies who wear cups because he lost both testicles as a small child and thus never experience a whack in the crackers.

I cant conferm this, but a friend of mine who I play Box with told me that a minor league hockey goalie was killed last week because of his pads not being thick enough and a puck hitting him between heart beats in the right spot......

Of course we in the lacrosse world are very familiar with cases of Commotio Cordis.

If someone on my team or any other team that I am playing against doesnt have a chest protector, they will not play. It is not safe at all and the fact that there have been fatalities in lacrosse due to balls being shot and striking players in the chest, it is absurd if any one doesnt where a chest protector.

Last year mid season, a player from Cornell was killed during a game when he was hit with a shot in the chest while playing D middie. He played HS ball at Landon I believe.

I tell you, I would rather protect myself from being injured, and let people laugh at me if they feel like that is the macho thing to do, then being hurt.

There was another case several years ago (I believe at UMASS) where a kid was killed just during gb drills. Ball bounced up and hit him in the chest and that was it. Scary situation. I've definitely been hit a couple times and had a split second where I thought it was lights out.

I bet Holtz or Counes can clarify this story, but from George at Michigan State I was told that they had a team treasurer (not playing) get hit in the crackers, lose one and have to get reconstructive surgery to save the other.

Goalies: I have much regret if I hit you with the ball, it's hard enough to find guys willing to step in, especially in indoor, that I always do my best to just put the ball straight into the net.

I actually wear shin guards....but before you start mocking, you must understand my goalie style. For those who have seen my play they can understand...where a normal goalie would make 90% of their saves with their stick, I make about 60% with my body, so for me shin guards are a must.

I with you Chris. Due to my lack of mobility (back injury), many times it was just easier to make a body save. Shin guards became a necessity, but wearing sweatpants was just a mental thing.

I will make sure that if I ever play you, I will get out of the way so the ball can easily just pass into the net....You know...but keep it under 30 goals, I have some kind of image to keep

Since UVALax15 brought up players without chest protectors I thought I would throw this one scenario out to you. We were playing in Texas last year when the opposing keeper got a penalty and they had to sub him out real quick with another player (I think it was their LSM) who put on the chest protector real quick and ran back on the field with his regular helmet without a throat guard. One of our assistants brought it up to the ref and told him "I don't want a penalty I just want to make sure the kid is safe out there". Our coach got a penalty for trying to protect the other teams goalie.... what justice.

Like I stated before, I have played goalie a couple times before in practice and since I am not normally a goalie, I don't own a throat protector. It does suck to get any deflection or shot to the throat, as this has happened before in practice and I had to "walk it off" for a couple minutes before going back in. The few times I did play goalie in a game, I just found a MacGuyver-way (athletic tape into long string laces type thing and tying it multiple times) to rig my CPX with the old school cascade throat protector. It worked but still probably not the safest way about doing it.

Actually, I have my face mask tied with strings rather than the screws on my CPro. I think it's safer because the screws break and the throat guard has some more movement with the nylon attaching it wheras with the screws, sometimes it would tend to get stuck up. It's plenty safe, just look at the way hockey goalies attach their throat guards.
