When I talked to Steve Dini last weekend, he said that they expect 800 to 1,000 fans for the UCSB vs. Cal game. Not sure where he came up with this figure, but that's not a bad sized crowd

He was including all of the extended UCSB family & supporters who are in the Bay Area. That would be approximately 700 - 900 of his figure.

Cal, no way. Too many boys who can milk the college admissions exams, but sputter out come game time.

They have lots of rookies on the roster, so I bet it will be a couple of years until we see a team like the Golden Bears of yesteryear. Especially since there is much more parity among the WCLL than ever before.

Among the USLIA, Cal is second only to Stanford in academics and is definitely the best public school. They will always be at a recruiting disadvantage. Regardless, Coach Dini has done a great job recruiting so far. We'll see if he can also bring up the field play and develop those new players.

Demolish?? A 2 goal game is a demolishing?? Well, I must concede that they were the better team on that day. . . .but on that day only.

It is a good thing your bobcats were not able to meet Berkeley in the Nor Cal championship game in 2003. There is no doubt Berkeley would have been the better team on that day also...

I'm not sure I can agree with that. As I recall, the CATS were 20-1 that year, with their only loss coming to Berkeley. Berkeley was 18-1 with their only loss coming to #12 University, who the CATS beat. It is obvious that the 2 teams were close that year, but I still think the CATS would have prevailed if they met in the playoffs. It was all set to happen if the CCS didn't step in. We'll never know for sure.

p.s. That loss to Berkeley in 2003 was the only loss for the 2003 seniors in their 4 years of high school. Can the Jackets make that claim?

For some reason Berkeley and University met 4 times in 2003 and Berkeley won the last 3 in dominating fasion. But that's besides the point. The Jackets can not make that claim but we are talking about 2003 here and 2003 only. I would argue that was Berkeley's strongest all around team in recent history and probably SI's weakest team up until then.

Can you clarify; are you saying that it was SI's only loss to Berkeley in 4 years or only loss to any team in 4 years?

I played on the Acalanes team in 2001 that beat SI twice in the regular season, so the latter statement above would be incorrect. (Too bad we choked in the finals, I'll never be able to let that one go... )

I was in the 2003 senior class and I lost one game my whole SI career. We lost that game to Berkeley and, luckily for Berkeley we got DQ'ed for some technicality. In my opinion, we would have thouroughly beaten Berkeley if we played them in the championships. Just like our beating of University(the team that beat you).

Gotcha. Weren't there any sophs on the varsity squad that year? Not to pull teeth over it, I see what you meant, but it could have been read either way.

No sophs on Varsity that year. We usually don't do that at SI unless the kid is big for his age and he can handle himself extremely well on the field too. Another kid in my class and I were called up to play on varsity for the State Championships. We got to play so no one could scout some of their starting players.
