Hmm...hadn't heard that. Why would Powers turn down Cornell and Loyola to play in Provo is he's not LDS? If BYU is not losing any of these guys next year, they should be very solid next spring.

I'd say last year (Hier, Davis, Naegle, R. Mangum, Harris, Hutton, Utterback, et al.) wasn't too shabby either (and I think these may all be LDS, for what that's worth). But then you didn't mention the Austins, Theurer, JM, Redd, etc. from this year...

I would assume they are as well, aren't they all on missions (ecept Davis?)
The elder mangum evidenty got married and doesn't have as much free time, according to his cousin.

I think so, (except maybe Harris, not sure about Utterback, and of course Davis and Hutton already served -- sorry, may have caught you with an edit, hard to mention enough folks but not everybody, sorry if there are gaps or irregularities). The Cougs will definitely miss Jon...

Jon Mangum is getting married this summer and spent the entire fall on an internship that took him to South America and Africa. He just did not have the time for lacrosse anymore.

Last years freshmen that are currently serving missions include Ross Mangum, Justin Hier, Steve Naegle, Todd Utterback, Bryant Angelos, Grant Cotterell, and a few others. Mark Davis and Paul Hutton were returned missionary freshmen last season and Harris had a medical condition I believe that required that he end his mission service early and that is why he was a freshmen last year. There are a few players that will be returning from missions this summer and should be back on the squad this fall.

All in all the past few years have brought in some talented freshmen, both pre-mission variety and post-mission variety.

By the way Laxdad...how is your missionary doing?

Not everybody has $150,000 lying around for 4 years in Ithaca. A BYU education (which is only afew thousand more for non-LDS students) is a bargain and can be done for less then $45,000 for 4 years. You don't have to be LDS to attend BYU, just live the honor code, get the grades and play for a great lacrosse program-several non-LDS players are doing that and loving their experience. Several extremely talented non-LDS players are close to committing for fall, 2005 and I expect that tend to continue.

I assumed "he turned down Cornell" meant there was a scholarship offer. Trust me, I lived with plenty of non-members at BYU, but most of them were on athletic scholarship.

I couldn't be happier to see the lacrosse program at the Y reach the point where non-members would consider it a place to come and play.

Don't they have a goalie coming back? Will that mean three #1's next season? Any chance when they get into the tournament Powers plays the entire game?

Doing really well, TrainerDan, thanks for asking. He just transferred to a new area, where they are calling him El Tigre because of his surprisingly good newly-acquired command of the Spanish language and familiarity with the Dominican culture, and his gung-ho attitude towards the work.

I didn't know he was in the DR. I have a few friends that went there. I went to a land-locked mission because I wouldn't have been able to resist the ocean.

The goalie you're referring to is Christian Kikumoto who should be returning this summer also. I did not include him because I do not have any info on whether or not he is coming back to BYU. If he did there would be a major logjam for playing time between the pipes with Powers, Glenn, and Christian.

As for who gets the call in the tournament...ask Jason that. My own impression is that the gameplan will stay the same as far as rotating the 2 goalies each half. I'm sure if Jason feels strongly that one should be in there more than another he may make the switch but if it ain't broke, why fix it?
