The box scores tell the story about this game. UCSD scored first at the 8:30 mark of the first quarter but Chapman answered back two minutes later. The rest of the game would be characterized by both teams counter-punching throughout the game. UCSD scored once more before the end of the firt and the first quarter ended with UCSD leading 2-1. In the second quarter, Chapman gathered momentum and was able to take 11 shots to UCSD's 5. The difference was shooting percentage as UCSD was able to put away 4 to Chapman's 3. San Diego went into the half with a 6-4 lead. The second half was characterized by several coaching adjustments as UCSD went in and out of zone defense and Chapman started to shoot from the outside rather than force the ball inside. The end result was Chapman scoring 4 goals on 15 shots while UCSD was only able to muster 3 goals on 8 shots. UCSD's lead was cut to one as the third quarter ended with the Tritons holding onto a 9-8 lead. UCSD scored 1:30 into the fourth quarter to extend their lead 10-8 but would go on an eleven minute scoring drought as the Chapman Panthers appplied the pressure, scoring the next three goals and taking the lead 11-10 with just 5:30 to play. Soon afterward, UCSD's freshman goalie Dave Piccinati (game MVP) made the play of the game. After a botched clear, a Chapman attackman ended up with the ball one-on-one against Piccinati, who made an incredible save after several fakes. In what would have probably sealed the victory for Chapman, Piccinati's effort breathed new life into the otherwise shell-shocked Tritons, who were watching their season slip away. In response, UCSD junior middie, Sean Onodera, caught a clearing pass at midfield and streaked threw several player to tie the game at 11 with 2:50 to play. With both teams playing for the game winner, a loose ball in the Chapman's defensive zone caused the Chapman goalie to come out of the cage as one of the Chapman defensemen flipped the ball toward the goal, leading to an own goal and a UCSD lead with just 59 seconds left on the clock. UCSD won the ensuing face-off and was running out the clock until the UCSD coaching staff called a possession time-out with 6 seconds left to play. Anticipating a double team on the ball with every other Chapman player shutting off, the Tritons sent Nick Dean to the ball. On the whistle, Nick lobbed a high-arching, almost-no-angle shot at the open net and it bounced in with with just one second on the clock - sending UCSD to their first WCLL Final Four since 1995. Special recognition goes out to goalkeeper Dave Piccinat who made 19 saves and Nick Dean (5g) who stepped up when his team needed him. Chapman coach Chad Donnelly and his team should also be commended for being well-prepared for the game, executing at both ends of the field, and showing a great deal of heart and composure.

Chico Summary:

Chico St came into Cal Poly with 0 playoff victories in its history. With ending the streak in mind, Chico came out pumped up. Dan Yob started things off with back to back goals and Chico rolled from there. The D played another great game only letting up a fourth quarter rip by Quirk. Blake Wahrlich made some unbelievable saves. Middy Kellen Breen came back after missing the last four games and put up a hat trick to lead all scorers.

Cal Poly Summary and great tribute to senior class:

Cal Poly finishes out the year with a disappointing loss at home. Chico played much better than the previous meeting between these two rivals and Poly congratulates Coach Warner and the rest of the Chico team on their Final Four berth. Poly graduates the senior class that has taken the program to new heights. Seniors Tom Alderman, Matt Faustman, Ryan Parr and Chris Wilkinson reached the USLIA National Championships three consecutive years during their careers and all will be missed by the Mustangs. This game came down to a very freak event where the Chapman D man made the mistake of tossing the ball into his own cage when he was trying to hit the goalie. This broke the tie game with under a minute left. Sometimes the cards dont go your way, and that was the case on Saturday for Chapman. Dean's goal with about 2 seconds to go on an empty net certainly makes it read like completely different game.
