Actually, I dealt with a racist comment (I'm Asian) a couple years ago when I was playing in an MDIA and it against an SELC school. My initial reaction was surprise, then obviously anger, but ultimately I felt sad for the player involved.
Growing up in the North, I had to deal with racist comments a couple times during high school playing lacrosse.
Unfortunately there will always be individuals who for whatever reason feel threatened by something that they may not understand, that will perpetuate racism. It isn't just white people having racism towards blacks or asians, but i've seen just as much black racism towards whites and asians, and asian racism towards black or white.
Usually, it's just somebody that doesn't realize that a world exists outside their comfort zone.

Are these truly racist comments? Or just ignorant people making ignorant comments? Alot of people like to throw the word racism around in this day and age. I bet that most folks can't actually define the word properly.

I don't think these 2 things are mutually exclusive. In fact, they go hand-in-hand.

As a Supreme Court Justice once said, "I'm not sure I can define it, but I know it when I see it" or hear it in this case. I don't think it's very difficult to tell when a racist comment is being made.

I would agree with CATLAX MAN, they are not mutually exclusive. People are racist and remarks are racist. There is no way around it. Whether or not that person is just remarking or they actually think they are superior because of their race makes no difference to me. Making racist remarks in a slanderous manner does nothing but perpetuate false stereotypes and sheltered paradigms. I would also say that sitting quietly by while teammates, friends, family, or even complete strangers make these comments is passive affirmation that that behavior is OK.

Well Sonny, I would say that it was a racist comment because the way I look at it, if somebody says something slanderous about one's ethnicity, I would categorize it as a racist comment. Now that doesn't necessarily mean that this said person is a racist, which I would define as someone who believes that their particular race is superior to all or any one specific race.
I think that people can make racist comments but not be completely racist.
Now, I do not mean in any way shape or form that the SELC or this particular team is racist or anything like that, it was a single isolated incident.
Like I said before, racism isn't just a white on black issue, rather in this day in age, I think ALL races can feel the effects of racism. Obviously the Caucasian race will feel this the least, and African Americans and Hispanics will probably feel it the most. Asians on the other hand, have always been portrayed as the "model minority." Asian culture stresses an excellent education, a successful career, and "to be seen and not heard."
But I've unfortunately met a few Asians that are racist, and I think alot of it comes from the elitist attitude of being a "model minority."
There is so much more I have to say on this subject, but alas, it is for another time and another day.

I encountered another situation at a MDIA game this weekend where an obvious racist comment was made by heckling fans at a game. I got up and walked over to them and told these guys that was not acceptable. Apologies were made, but not to the right people, the player to who it was directed and that player's mother who had to have heard it as she was sitting pretty near where I was sitting. I felt so bad for her having to put up with crap like this. When are people going to stop being so stupid?

I applaud your action. Too often people are hesitant to stand up and let these sad individuals know that their behavior will not be tolerated. If more of us were proactive in this manner, at a minimum, those who think this way and/or make these comments will reconsider before opening their mouths.
