Putting on the eye black is definitly a personal choice, and many players do get creative with it which adds some intimidation on some players. It would be funny if someone pulled out the old school John Randle batman paint around the eyes. But about the glare if properly used it can reduce glare into the eyes but that all depends on the amount of sunlight there is on that day.

The official in question informed me that by putting inverted triangles under their eyes, my players were either violating rules on uniform standards, or skirting the boundry (on the wrong side) of an unsportsmanlike penalty. Mind you, they players were emulating exactly what Powell did.

I raised it with the Assigner at the time, and I'm fairly certain he addressed it with the official, as I didn't get the same warning from the official in the next game he did.

Somewhere way back in my memory I remember a discussion about prohibiting players from wearing "intimidating" face paint but in high school not college games. I also recall that it was an National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rule not NCAA. I looked through the NFHS rule book and found nothing so I can't confirm it.

The NFHS rules include even more little stuff than the NCAA rules like the prohibition on jewelery. If you want to be completely confused, try reading the requirements for removable cleats in the NFHS rules.

This year the NFHS added two rules that had many of us shaking our heads: First, they have asked officials to make sure the players stay on their own half of the field during warm ups. No taking a lap of the field to warm-up, you'll have to go around your half of the field twice instead.

The NFHS has added a form of coach's challenge to the rules this year - if a coach thinks an official has misapplied a rule, he can ask for a review but risks using a time out in the process. I haven't had any coach try it yet but it could get interesting. Wouldn't that be interesting if it were in the NCAA rules...

Hey Matt,

I'm not sure if it should be in the rule book, but it's always been a pet peeve of mine when a team takes their warmup lap on the other team's half of the field. It's just common courtesy not to do that. Most teams follow that unwritten rule (now unwritten at the NCAA level only, I guess), but there always seems to be one each year that does it to us. It always fires us up. The vast majority of teams understand that it's appropriate to keep to their half. Now if we could just get the vast majority of drivers to understand they're not supposed to cruise in the left lane...

The second rule, about the challenges, seems like a good idea on the surface, but I can't imagine actually executing it. The rules are hard enough to interpret in certain areas - if one of those vague areas is challenged, how do you come to a conclusion on the field between officials and coaches? You'd have to have an abitrator. Maybe that should be added to the crew: referee, umpire, field judge, arbitrator/rules interpreter. He can replace the CBO.

Regarding the "Coaches Challenge" in NFHS rules - if they want to stop play to question a judgment call -- Then they have used one of their timeouts. (If they have no timeouts remaining, then you can enforce a technical foul against the In-Home.)

The only time they can challenge a rule successfully is if they think a rule is misapplied. Judgement calls are not subject to review and if the call stands as originally applied then a timeout is charged to the team/coach request the rule review.

I always wear eyeblack other than back in the day at practice but I do think it helps with the glare of the sun into your eyes and it was a just something I did before every game.

And if I recall correctly it left you looking like Alice Cooper for at least the next week...just kidding buddy

You know, I was actually approached by a ref before the game as I was getting ready, and he asked me personally not to use the eye paint. He said it was because it would only tarnish a man of my natural intimidation. Plus, sammy used to use enough for the both of us.

We played a GLLC game against some tiny team and one of their defensemen had sharpied 'hit you' under his eyes. We won that game 13-0.
