WCLL Playoffs Info/Schedule

Here is some info I found on the playoffs that will be held at Miramonte High School:

The WCLL Quarterfinals will be the weekend of April 23-24 and the WCLL Final Four will be April 30 and May 1, 2005.

Adult tickets are regularly $15 per day, and youth (under 16) are regularly $12.

Packages:

2 Day Package includes: 2 days wristbands
(total 4 college games)
2 tickets for bag lunches
1 Tournament T-shirt

Adult Price: $45 for both days
Youth Price: $40 for both days

1 Day Package includes: 1 day wristband
(total 2 college games)
1 ticket for bag lunch
1 Tournament T-shirt

Adult Price: $25 for 1 day
Youth Price: $25 for 1 day

That's what I was thinking. They didn't even charge this much for the national tournament.

That does sound like a lot of money although the package deal isn't too bad if you were interested in a t-shirt. Those normally run 15 bucks so for the one day, that's 10 bucks to get inside plus a lunch which isn't too bad but still a little more then I would want to pay.

Where are the packages available? Too bad they don't have a "family pack"-it'll cost a small fortune for a family of four!

Random thoughts:

Where does this money go? Does the host, Cal, get all the proceeds? Is it split with the league? Do the Final Four schools/lax teams get a cut? I've heard they are expecting 1,000- 2,000 in attendance. Multiply that by the numbers above and we're talking serious cash that should be distributed appropriately.

Just to put it in perspective, renting field space can be very expensive in the Bay Area. Especially if you're playing night games. Some towns have "light pollution" ordinances, and only allow fields to use their lights a fixed number of nights per year. (I think San Francisco has this ordinance.) This artificially raises the cost of using a field's lights.

It's a little more involved than just hosting a regular game. You have to pay a janitor crew, trainers, and possibly refs. You also need to find volunteers or hire people to take tickets, sell food and t-shirts, and run the scorebooth and PA system.

They are not playing at night, so lighting is a non-issue. What the issue is that this was being promoted as an event to get the youth to attend by having games on alternate fields an then getting to watch the best that the WCLL has to offer. Charging kids $12 to attend these games is not the way to promote the sport and get them to attend, in my opinion.

Gentlemen,

Each year one WCLL team, this year CAL, is awarded the rights to host the WCLL playoffs. Actually they get the rights to assume all the RISK to host this event, as the WCLL does not provide the host any funds for this event.

They must arrange and pay for all fields, security, concessions, parking etc. The WCLL pays for the officials and their expenses and that is all.

Obviously the host wants to make some money and is not doing this as a charitable event. Not sure what the cost to run this usually is, so I can't tell if these charges is excessive or not.

Personally, I wouldn't charge college, HS or youth players and more than they usually pay to see games at their home school ($1-3). Parents and adults- fair game.

I meant no disrespect, I just think the league should get some dough out of this if Cal is charging so much. The league's best are the ones on stage afterall...

I'm not one to disagree with that. However, it is so hard for the league to get anyone interested enough in hosting the event, that if we demanded a piece of the pie, we might discourage the few takers we get.

There are a bunch of UCSB students who want to make the trip up to the Bay Area to see the games. I have to tell them that it is $12 for a ticket. Some of them are still going because they are die hard fans, but the others don't really want to go. Is there any way that Cal can make student discounts? What about players from teams that aren't in the final four? Do they have to pay the full amount?

I just wanna echo the beast's concerns. $12 bucks seems steep for the average joe hs/college fan. No doubt momma and pappa cossack er seawolf will shell out whatever to cheer on johnny. But if youre attempting to cater to the lifeblood of college sports (ie young vocal fans), you gotta cut some slack.

How about half price with student ID?

Or 5 bucks if you wear school colors/apparel?

Or 3 bucks if you come in head to toe bodypaint?

This is generating alot of anger around the league and in the Bay Area.
