Division A Playoff Picture

Division A Playoff Picture

Postby bste_lax on Mon Apr 04, 2005 5:20 pm

Here is my attempt to start to weed out all the details and see what's going on in the Division A about playoffs. This is all a big IF THE PLAYOFFS WERE TODAY. Don't take this as 100% either as I don't have the newest bylaws to know tiebreakers and such but basing this off old-bylaws.

Standings for each sub-region

East
Illinois State 3-0
Wash U 1-0
Illinois 2-1
Iowa 1-4
SLU 0-2

West
Lindenwood 2-0
Kansas 2-1
Mizzou 1-1
SMS 2-3
Kansas State 0-2

If the playoffs were today, Illinois State would be #1 seed, Lindenwood #2 (since they are top 2 teams and ISU is 3-0 to LU's 2-0 record). Their game on April 15th might seed who is #1 and #2 if they were to win out the rest of their games.

Then you throw all teams together:

Wash U 1-0
Illinois 2-1
Kansas 2-1
Mizzou 1-1
SMS 2-3
Iowa 1-4
SLU 0-2
Kansas State 0-2

That would mean Wash U as the #3, Illinois #4, Kansas #5 and Mizzou right now at #6. That is if the playoffs were today.

Wash U plays Mizzou while Illinois plays Kansas. Then Illinois State plays the highest seed of the winners while Lindenwood plays lower seed of the winners (I think that's how GRLC does it now).

With all that said and done........NO ONE HAS CLINCHED ANYTHING yet while no team is out of it yet with Iowa on the edge. They need to win their last 2 conference games and need help (Team A beats B by X goals).

Lots of lacrosse left and just wanted to start to see what's happening with playoffs.

never mind, Kyle just sent out an email desribing in depth everything. It seems as though there are some huge games left to see who gets to go to the championships.

Matt, here's your "in the loop" info...

Playoff Standings for GRLC Division A

No playoff seeds are locked, although Lindenwood has already locked a ticket
to playoffs. Illinois and Illinois State are guaranteed a slot with any
additional win. WUSTL, Missouri, Kansas and SMS can lock a playoff slot with one
additional win, although only 3 additional slots remain Any of those four would
be guaranteed a slot with two additional wins (as SMS and KU play each
other). Seeding is far from set. As Lindenwood plays WUSTL this season, we are
guaranteed to have no more than one undefeated team. (All scores as reported to
GRLC.org)

Tiebreakers for seeding are taken from the bylaws (bold and underline added
for emphasis):
4-2-b In the event of a tie, the first tiebreaker shall be the results of
head-to-head competition between the two teams during the current regular
season (in the game that was determined to count toward the rankings). If this
does not produce a solution (due to more than two teams being tied or any other
reason), the second tiebreaker shall be overall goal-differential in required
GRLC play during the current regular season. Plus or minus goal differentials
in excess of 8 shall not count towards the tiebreaker for more than 8 goals.
The third tiebreaker shall be a coin flip, with the Vice Commissioner flipping
the coin in the presence of at least one other Executive Board member from a
different school present.

Big 10 Subdivision:

Illinois (currently 3-1) Wins over ISU +4, Iowa +8, SLU +8, Loss to LU -1
(at +19) Must still play WUSTL, KU, SMS
Illinois State (currently 3-1) Wins over Iowa+8, SMS+3, KU+4, Loss to
Illinois-4 (at +11) must still play SLU, WUSTL and Lindenwood
Wash U (currently 2-0) Wins over Iowa +6 and KSU +8. (at +14) Must still
play Illinois, ISU, SLU, Missouri and Lindenwood.
Iowa (currently 1-4) Win over SLU +8, Losses to Illinois -8, ISU -8, WUSTL
-6, KU -1 (at - 15) Must still play Missouri and SLU
SLU (currently 0-4) Losses to Illinois -8, Iowa -8, SMS -8, KSU -5 (at - 29)
Must still play Illinois State, WUSTL and Missouri

Big 12 Subdivision:

Lindenwood (currently 4-0) wins over KSU +8, Missouri +1, SMS +6, Illinois +1
(at +16) Must still play Kansas, WUSTL and ISU.
Missouri (currently 2-1) wins over Kansas +8, SMS +3. Loss to LU -1 (at
+10) Must still play KSU, Iowa, SLU, WUSTL.
Kansas (currently 2-2) wins over KSU +2, Iowa +1. Losses to ISU -4,
Missouri -8. (at -9) Must still play Lindenwood, SMS, Illinois
SMS (currently 2-3) wins over KSU +3, SLU +8. Losses to Missouri -3,
Lindenwood -6, ISU -3. (at -1) Must still play KU, Illinois.
Kansas State (currently 1-4) win over SLU +5, losses to KU -2, Lindenwood
-8, SMS -3, WUSTL -8. (at -16) Must still play Missouri, Iowa.

Playoffs slots are given regardless of subdivision. Top 6 overall finishers
garner playoff slots. Playoffs always feature the highest remaining seed
playing the lowest remaining seed, with the top two finishers receiving a first
round bye.

Current standings:

Lindenwood (4-0) +16
Illinois (3-1) +19
Illinois State (3-1) +11
WUSTL (2-0) +14
Missouri (2-1) +10
Kansas (2-2) -9
SMS (2-3) -1
Iowa (1-4) -15
Kansas State (1-4) -16
SLU (0-4) -29

Lindenwood has secured a playoff slot and has three remaining games. They
must play Illinois State this Friday away, KU this Sunday at home, and WUSTL on
Wed the 20. Should they win out, they will be guaranteed a bye.
Illinois Will be guaranteed a playoff slot with any additional win, and has
three remaining games. They must play WUSTL this Saturday, SMS on Sat the 23
and KU on Sun the 24.
Illinois State Will be guaranteed a playoff slot with any additional win, and
has three remaining games. They must play Lindenwood this Friday, WUSTL this
Sunday and SLU on Sat the 23.
WUSTL has five remaining games and is relatively untested. They must play
SLU (Sun the 24) and all the big boys (in order of play) Illinois on this
Saturday, Illinois State this Sunday, Lindenwood on Wed the 20th, and Missouri on
Sat the 23. WUSTL secures a playoff slot with any two wins. Should they win
only one remaining game, they would go into tiebreaks with any other 3-win teams.
Missouri has four remaining games against relative unknown WUSTL on Sat the
23, against KSU on Friday, Iowa on Sunday, and SLU (TBD). Missouri secures a
playoff slot with any two wins. Should they win only one remaining game, they
would go into tiebreaks with any other 3-win teams.
Kansas has three remaining games, including a very big home game against SMS
at home on Fri the 22. The winner of the SMS v. Kansas game will take the
last playoff spot on head to head tiebreaker, unless Missouri (and/or) WUSTL lose
all their remaining games, or Should Kansas BOTH beat SMS and either
Lindenwood or Illinois. Kansas must play Lindenwood this Sunday and Illinois on Sun
the 24th.
Southwest Missouri has two remaining games, including a very big game
against Kansas (away on Fri the 22). The winner of the SMS v Kansas game will take
the last playoff spot on head to head tiebreaker, unless Missouri (and/or)
WUSTL lose all their remaining games, or should SMS beat BOTH Kansas and
Illinois. SMS must play Illinois on Sat the 23
Iowa has a big game left against Kansas State this Saturday. They must also
play Missouri on Sunday. They must win both games and (2 of the 4) WUSTL,
Missouri, Kansas and SMS must lose all remaining games for Iowa to make playoffs.
Either Kansas State or Iowa will garner at least one more win.
Kansas State has a big game left against Iowa this Saturday. They must also
play Missouri on Friday. They must win both games and (2 of the 4) WUSTL,

Either Kansas State or Iowa will garner at least one more win.
St. Louis University is mathmatically eliminated. Should they win all three
remaining games by 8 or more, they'd be 3-4 and at -5, having defeated three
teams with winning records, not one of the teams they would be competing for
playoffs against.

Playoff Standings for GRLC Division B

We cannot display such a run-down for Division B until the Executive Board has voted on how to handle the dropout situation of SEMO and Truman State.

Yes they did, although it could be not one of their crossover games they drew and they still scheduled them. So it doesn't count towards conference record. (Looks like they got Iowa, SLU and Wash U as their crossover games).

sorry for the double post. I must have been in the process when beckner sent it.

Illinois did beat Missouri, but it was not a required crossover game, and thus does not count towards standings in any manor.

It would appear as though there will be some great games, and pretty important games for the next 2 weeks.
