Question about Title IX, is it true their doesn't need to be an equal amount of sports but a proportional one tot he amount of males/females in the student body?

When you employ a metric that requires direct measurement, the gender ratio is a factor in the equation. There are other metrics to show compliance with TitleIx, but because they are not easily measured, institutions tend to shy away from them.

Interesting.......Cornell College had a girl when I helped them out at end of last Spring. I talked to their coach, former Iowa player, this past fall who said they were told that she couldn't play by someone within USL MDIA.

As of this fall at the GRLC conference Cornell was still planning on having a few girls play for them. But then again they also said they were going to have 30 players...we're all optimistic about our numbers though.

This is really hard for me (as a woman-athlete who all of my life has had to deal with discrimination and getting crap for playing with the guys) to admit that Title IX has run its course. It was a wonderful thing and I would not be the person I am today without it. But its really sad to see that its actually starting to hurt men's sports.
JUST NOW STARTING TO HURT MEN'S SPORTS?? Where have you been the last 30 years?? Title IX has been hurting men's sports SINCE IT'S INCEPTION! It is a terrible system, everyone knows it, but no one has come up with anything better!
FACTS:
Of the close to 200 NCAA Men's Football Teams - only 2 lose money.
Where are you getting this fact? Find me a 1-AA team that makes money. Many of them lose several million dollars per year. D2 and D3 football are also extremely poor investments.
Every other sport, men's and women's, loses money.
Some game that this guy Naismith invented brings in a few bucks here and there.
The most popular men's sport: Football - Roster Size of 100 - Avg. Scholarships on each team (which are also Title IX restricted) around 80.
80 is not the average. It is the max allowed on 1-A football teams. I think the max in 1-AA is 60 and something like 36 for D2. Once again this is the maximum allowed, not the average.
When Title IX went into effect schools were put into a position to either add more women's teams (that all lose money) or cut men's teams (which also lose money) - which one makes more since financially? Hense there are less than 40 NCAA Div. 1 Men's Lacrosse Teams left. That's just sad!
Wrong, there are over 50 D1 teams.
Title IX has set up men's sports to fail - plain and simple!
Title IX addresses any federally funded educational program, not just sports programs. It has been around for a long time and was focused on so many more things than organized athletics. Not that I am happy with how this plan tends to limit the expansion of big time NCAA men's lacrosse, but the main culprit of this lack of expansion is that most AD's are football or basketball guys. Not very many of them are going to dole out their pennies for lacrosse, since most AD's are not lacrosse guys.
Instead of pointing the finger at a program that aims to allow equal benefit for all parties, blame the people who are authorizing ridiculous miscellaneous expenditures of a football or basketball program that would exceed the cost of an entire varsity men's lacrosse program. Remember that football has several full-time coaching staff members not to mention all the little dollars spent here and there on each of the 50+ rostered team members no matter what division you are talking about. And often much money is being spent on players who don't even dress on gamedays.

Most of my information was attained from the Denver Post in 2002 (the 30 year anniversary series they published). And until just about 3 years ago there were only 36 NCAA D1 Lacrosse Teams - since then more have been added I guess.
My next question is... if Title IX affects federally funded programs (which I know it does - including athletics and academics) why doesn't it affect our club status? I mean, we're all club because we can avoid Title IX and most of us get at least some money (varying between teams) from our student fees, student government, or club sports dept. - which is essentially being channeled through a federally funded system... so why no pressure from Title IX on "club"?

it still does affect the club status. There are no football club teams gobbling up 90% of the support on our side. Generally with club teams you have a women's sport to balance out the men's side.
Title 9 is a great theory, the implementation is flawed. Football needs to be taken out of the balance, that or we need to start a d1 womens football league.

There have been over 50 NCAA D1 programs for many, many years. That number dropped down to the low 50s a few years ago, and has since bumped back up with the addition of 3 D1 programs this year. Maybe the Denver Post needs to take a look at their fact checkers. They were way off.
Technically Title IX does effect club sports. Club sports support probably just hasn't been challenged yet in court.

Q: Do you think title IX would effect sports clubs that are entirely self-funded? (i.e. they don't get a single dime from said institution).

i think they would actually. i think we had a thread on this before 'the hack' and someone mentioned the self-funded d1 marquette wrestling squad that got axed. I don't see how club status would be any different.
