I was wondering what people think is a good limit as far as goals go? I have noticed a lot of teams puttin up 20+ goals in games where they have an obvious advantage over their opponents. Some teams even have second units that can rack up 20+ goals. My thought is at what point is it unsportsmanlike to keep putting in goals. I find it interesting, because having been on both sides of the scoreboard, I'm not sure what the eight answer is. When does scoring goals go from executing within one's offense to padding stats?

I don't think it's unsportsmanlike to put 20+ on a team, providing everyone on your team is playing, and you're trying to get everyone involved. I was talking to a coach about it the other day, and we both agree, putting you D poles at attack, and Attack at D is more insulting that running 2nd and 3rd line middies the majority of the game. When a team outmatches someone bad enough to put 20 on them, the leading scorers will typically understand when they get benched, or that they are not allowed to shoot. I remember playing a team, we won 25-3 or close to that, and I stopped on the crease to bring the ball back out, and get it to a rookie. That could have been viewed as very unsportsmanlike, but so can holding the ball on offense to run out the clock. Because of that, I tell my team to try to get everyone involved, and I'll pull the starters when possible, getting our rookies playing time.

Calvin College had a game last week against an overmatched Hope College squad. After rolling to a 17 - 0 halftime lead, the Calvin coach had the second team in primarily and they worked on cutting without the ball, making passes around the circle, etc., and only added three in the 2nd. Good sportsmanship, and good practice. Unfortunately Hope's lone goal was called off because the initial shooter tried a Gait move from behind and jumped into the crease. His teammate caught the rebound and put it home, but the whistle was already blowing.

20+ is no big deal. You can't put the guys who dont' play much in there and tell them to run out the clock. Let them play to score.

As a goalie I find it personally insulting when the opposing team stop taking shots. Don't quit, let me make a couple of saves. I'd rather let in 20 goals then watch the 3rd string attackmen play catch.

Danny's right. When I coached h.s. and had 57 guys on varsity (they don't cut people in TX), I found it hard to tell the 8th line middie not to score. I mean the kid never sees the field, and besides that, being an 8th line middie, I didn't know his name to tell him not to score.

When we played Western Carolina, we went to running time the 2nd half and had 3rd and 4th lines in at midfield and 2nd line of D and A where we had subs. We passed the ball around the horn a lot, but what are you suppose to do when the Defense leaves you untouched 5 yards from the goal?

attacking the goal is better because it creates opportunity for a turnover. The UF women's team played Middlebury during their championship year and was down 17-3 in the 2nd half, middlebury passed it around for the last 8 min of the game, it was humiliating for UF. Middlebury might have thought they were doing the right thing, but i would prefer to give up like 25 goals as to being in the middle of a huge game of keep-away.

I think how the other team is reacting has a lot to do with it. When I played at Lehigh, we beat VMI 22-5 and most everyone got to play. Our coaches didn't put any restrictions on us because VMI's defense certainly wasn't taking it easy on us as far as playing physically and aggressively. I agree that playing "keep-away" only leads to frustration for the other team and that can often have unfortunate consequences such as cheap shots and the like. It's better to get the younger guys in and let them play hard in the context of your normal offense.

This reminds me of seeing a picture of a high school lax goalie looking so bored by deciding to sit down on the real grass while watching his teammates on the other side of the field. That was about 25 years ago. I still vividly remember two pictures of him- on the left side showing him standing up and looking over yonder and on the right side- he sat down with his stick still looking ahead across the field. His team at that time would average around 20+ goals.

"This was never a debate (running up the score) during my playing days at A&M, 99-03, so I have no perspective to comment on this issue," noted Chris, long time message board lurker and poster.
Note the heavy sarcasm in the above post. I figured all of my old school 'posters' here on the board would get a kick out of the above quote.
