Helmet battle

First, I wouldn't suggest keeping a helmet for 5 years, but the CPX is one size with inserts to size it, so you could adjust it in a year or two if need be. I heard the C-Pro's are being discontinued. I like the CPX's. List price is $180. I think they are worth the money, of course I didn't pay near that amount for it.

If the helmet is too tight... Take the facemask off, and stretch it wider. One of my current players has to do it with any helmet he has, and from the team I played on, there were a handful of guys that did it.

Syracuse has a choice between Brine and Cascade. Both helmets are on the sideline during a scrimmage versus Navy . But other pictures in that album (someone else's) show like 90% of the Cuse players wearing the CPX, so that should tell you something.

I'd wear Salisbury's brine helmets, Syracuse's brine helmets, and Pete Jokisch's CSU brine helmet from fall ball ANYDAY.

You'd prob. wear his underware to.... lay off his jock.

SU has recently gotten in trouble with Cascade because of a few players wearing the Brine. Leville always wore his Brine helmet (example Gtown game and others). No one wheres the Brine now on that team, prob. because of the contract they have with Cascade.

I've been contacted by Riddell re their new Helmet, and I am obtaining one to test myself this spring/summer. I'll post my impressions later.

riddell's helmet is the heaviest and most uncomfortable helmet ever made. we can't even sell those things out of our store, so we got rid of those things.

They are the heaviest, yet that goes with being the most protective. I will argue that they are the most uncomfortable. I think they are very comfortable and I didn't really notice the weight of it once you get playing. I have heard complaints about guys getting cuts on the forehead though. Michigan uses them, they switched because of concussions. Coach Paul can maybe chime in on them since theyve used them for a couple seasons now.

The CPX's are nice though. Comfortable and light, yet not sure how protective. And isn't that what they're for??

We're very happy with Riddell. We have a couple of guys on the team who don't like them, but most of the guys say they're the most comfortable helmet they've worn. We did make the switch for safety reasons, and we've had no closed head injuries in the 1 1/2 years since after repeated problems when we were wearing another brand, including a couple of players who's careers ended due to multiple ocurrances. We've had one player each season get a cut around his eyebrow from contact, but we had the same thing happen with our old helmets, and I've spoken with other coaches who've seen more significant problems with that same issue with other brands. We've received tremendous, personal service from Riddell. I have no real complaints. In Riddell's first year we were their only college team, along with several big name high school programs in the east. This year they've added a number of college teams, including several ranked D1 programs. Riddell does not outfit teams for free, even for major college football. The teams you see wearing their stuff are paying something for it and still making the choice to use it. That says something to me.

The main issue people have seems to be the weight. They are heavier, no doubt. They also have a custom fit system that makes the weight seem to disappear if you know how to adjust them. In reality, it's only a few ounces. We are all just accustomed to very lightweight helmets. I personally don't believe that lighter equals better when the main function is protection - especially for your head.

One of my biggest concerns is the "custom fitting" that appears necessary with the Riddell's - Do you have the players do that themselves? Or did Riddell send some out/teach a coach how to do that?

In our case, Riddell sent someone out, and periodically sends others out to "check in" on us. We also have one of our coaches who acts as our equipment guy who's pretty skilled at it, and one of our managers is also pretty good. It's not rocket science though. Not moving around, but not too tight = good fit, don't adjust. Too loose and unstable or too tight and uncomfortable = adjustment needed. Just add or subtract some air in the bladders until it's right. They need to be adjusted for most guys from time to time (maybe every month or two for some), but that's a 20 second process.

im using a CPX right now and i love it, but my high school went to the riddell my senior year and those helmets are amazing. they are a little heavy but they are so comfy there is no comaring
