Question regarding PCLL teams . . .

How well do you teams get the random "pretty good in high school but didn't want to play Varsity in college" kid on campus to come out and play? It seems to me that there would be a little bit more of those types of kids, either who wanted to stay on the east coast for whatever reason but didn't end up playing NCAA. Do you teams think that there are a large group of lacrosse players on campus that do not come out for your MDIA teams? At CSU, I would see some local area high school lacrosse jackets on kids who were not on the team, so I figured there are probably more in an east coast setting. Do these kids know about the team and not want to play or perhaps not know at all that there is a decent lacrosse option after high school?

Alex,

Actually happens a lot. BC gets a ton of guys from prep school and a good number from the mid-atlantic. Plus, New England and the northeast has some great youth and high school lacrosse.

Given the amount of former players from HS applying to BC, the team normally gets anywhere from 60-90 guys trying out, a good number of which were DIII and DI recruits. For some, the idea of practice and commitment was just too much for a college life!

We're actually only in our 3rd year now with the USLIA and are very much a growing team. We are constantly getting more and more questions about our team from both students on campus as well as guys applying in the next year or so. More wins and higher rankings = more fans and interest. Against BU last Friday night, there were close to 500 people in the stands, several with the HS lax jackets on!

It'll never make sense why someone who loves a sport, gets recruited and then decides not to play when given the opportunity.

Adding to Rad's comments, we get a number of high school kids who were all league and all american and took recruiting visits only to decide that varsity lacrosse was too much of a committment. We actually have some pretty good colorado players (Matt McConaty, Chris Coakly, Tim Gilchrist, Austin Roberts) who came out here and decided to come to BC.

I think a reason why this might happen, especially on the east coast, is that some kids may come out of very intense lacrosse towns, they start in youth and by the time they get through high school, they're burnt out on lacrosse. I think other kids just become lazy.

A quick note for Rad, 500 fans is a little much. I counted about 250 to tops 300. Still very impressive, especially considering 80% were beautiful blonds swilling Busch Light cans.

To answer the original question, it depends on the team regarding the type of players they get. For instance, Bridgewater gets lots of local Massachusetts guys. Their roster is probably 85% guys from this state. Considering how fast lax is growing in Mass, that is a good thing.

BC gets players from NY, MD, CO, NJ who want to attend BC because they get to attend BC. Great academics, Big East (soon to be ACC) sports, wonderful city, beautiful women. Having a top notch lax team is now being tossed into the mix. A lot of these students are legacy, their parents and brothers and sisters attended, and continue tradition. A lot attended prep schools and come from great lacrosse areas. And as noted, a lot were recruited for Div. lax, but the commitment was just too great.

BU & Northeastern have a lot of the same things BC has going for it. Both are schools right in the city with good academics depending on the programs you are looking for. For me, I opted for BU over playing Div. I at UNH because I liked the city and BU's journalism program. (Good thing since UNH lost their team around junior year.) But BU and Northeastern draw a lot of students from lower NY, NJ, and Long Island. A player form these areas may not be Div. I recruit, but most likely have been playing lax since age 10.
