Hey guys, I know it doesn't sound like there's going to be a PNCLL all star game this year. However, it would be inetersting to hear who everyone thinks will make the list.

An allstar team will be selected as usual. First team, Second team and honorable mentions will be selected by a tally of allstar votes received after each game by the opposing team. Every year players get selected and some do not get selected but that is just the nature of the game. Every year some people complain about who gets selected and who does not get selected. No system is perfect and not every deserving person can be on an allstar team due to position and the number of players per team, usually capped at 5. That being said you will see a lot of the same people that made the team last year with a few new names mixed in.

I do not have time to do all of the research but quickly here are the top 5 players for the A division
Gonzaga - Kladis, Twining, Stein, Castiglia, MacLean
OSU - Tipton, Loomis, Clayton, Carpenter, Meinhard
SFU - Christians, Reelie, Hoskins, Yuen, Pascas
UofO - JTesar, Coffman, Cooley, Ernst, Cordova
UofW - Sonkin, Newman, Weitz, Steinecker, Bass
UofI - have not seen them play to know

Like I said earlier there are players not named above that are probably deserving but since I capped it at 6 there is not much I can do. The ratio of attack, middies, biggies and keepers is probably off too.

Offensive MVP - Sonkin or Tipton
Defensive MVP - Cordova or Hoskins
Overall MVP - Tipton, Kladis, or Hoskins. In my mind the overall MVP is someone who makes a definate difference on the field or if taken out of the lineup his team would not be the same. That can be said for all three of the players mentioned above.
Rookie of the Year - Pascas

I am interested in hearing from other people on this though as it is always an interesting topic.

Offensive MVP

Postby NCInDaPlaceTaBe on Fri Mar 25, 2005 12:40 am

Offensive MVP...Hands down Julian Coffman. I've played against tipton and sonkin, and yeah they make a difference on their team. But if we're talking about who is a threat to pass, dodge, shoot, and finish, it's definitly Scrape-Mode hands down.

No way.

So far, I see no reason not to give it to Sonkin. For his point total and what the dogs are doing this year, how can you not? Since there is still a few weeks left in the season, things could change slightly, but, right now, he is the mid-season Off. MVP.

Eli should be the front runner. He has a great supporting cast of players that can make a huge impact on any night they choose, but he's carrying the that team right now. 5+ points a game, on the suprise first place team. Granted Weitz is also at 3+, but you've got to give they guy his credit. Although, I could see a boycott of Husky purple for a while after that Louiville game last night....

i agree, i was actually impressed with sonkin after i saw him play a couple years back, on oregon's home field. that said, i haven't seen him play this year, but with what washington's done so far and the numbers he's put up, i think it'd be hard not to give him something. anyway, best players play their best in big games, and there's still plenty of those to come... this year's final four should be sweet! as for hoskins for league mvp, how can that be?! hasn't he been out almost this entire season. steve

That is my point. Without Hoskins SFU has gone into a tailspin of inconsistency. Obviously he brings a lot to the team, with him the Clan seem to have a cohesive defensive unit. Without him SFU has been looking for someone to fill his shoes and have been unsuccessful in doing so. As I said earlier an MVP should go to someone who makes a difference when he plays or when he does not play for whatever reason his team misses him dearly.

Steve, maybe you have a bone to pick with him I don't really know or give two hoots. But I am sure you witnessed the turmoil that SFU has suffered with Nathan's absence when your team beat them in SLO earlier this year. With a 4 goal lead with less than 3 mins to go and blow it to a young inexperienced LMU team says something to me. Before his injury the Clan had a goals against of less than 5 I believe. During his absence their goals against have ballooned and they have lost to a couple of teams that they should not have and their faceoff's are brutal. Many of the draws could be considered sawoffs as their is no clear possession but their LSM's filling in do not seem to have the ability to fight for and gain possession of the loose ball. I know you have not seen any of SFU's games in the PNW so I really do not know what you are basing your opinion on except your three years together as teammates. Things change from year to year and a players value to his team changes from year to year. Maybe he won't win MVP but I do think he is a valuable player to the SFU team.

He definately maybe the SFU MVP, I actually haven't seen him play, but in my eyes the league MVP needs to be around, and win games as a leader. The reason I like Sonkin, is partially because of how good Eric W. has been for UW. He's their go to guy, with the best defender on him, and Eli has stepped up, to carry the team. Pretty nice 1-2 punch, and yes they both have help, but usually the MVP comes on the best team (UW is in the lead as of now, a lot can happen over the next four weeks). Too bad an injury can keep someone out of the spotlight, and more importantly hurt their team so badly, but its tough to give that guy the MVP for how his team performed when he was missing.

Overall, we could put together quite an all-star team here in the Northwest, so everyone mentioned should be proud. The fact its not a hands down race is nice for all of us watching the A league. It gets kind of boring when you know its going to go to Ricky Clark..... that guy was good.

Just wanted to give a shout out to some of the solid B league players that I have seen play so far this year. We have not played Whitman but I know Sadler has crazy skills and Montana's Hall has put up huge numbers this year too. I haven't seen Albertson or Western Washington either so give a shout out to anyone I miss because I know there are a ton of Solid players in the League and I am going to leave some out. Sorry.
Ok. PLU's big 4 of Jensen, Olsen, Kennedy and Zubizarreta move the ball extremely well and are a team of their own and their d is solid throughout. Lewis and Clark's goalie Rafiel Cuevas has very very quick hands and is a solid all around goalie and he is complimented by a couple of talented D-poles. Scott McAmis finds a way to get open well and has a quick shot UPS' D-poles shouldn't be overlooked either. Central Washington has a big attack in Alan Colombo and Jonny Mack that can back you down for a close shot. Nyc Hayden from Western Oregon has a slash and shoot game that frustrated our defense and Kennan Clark is a great d-pole. Willamette's Brian Stur is also a solid attack. I don't want to talk up my team any but Taylor Brennan, Jon Kersley and d-pole Kieth Foster all have had great years so far.

Offensive MVP-Brennan, Hall, or Sadler
Defensive MVP-Cuevas, Foster, Bartell

I don't actually know if they give these awards out for B league and these are my opinions of the teams that I have seen so far.

They do give them for the B league....

The best D-pole I have seen all year is Montana's junior Ryan Frey. I thought Western was stacked with poles, and they are, but this guy is a cut above the rest. If it doesn't go to a praticular goalie, Ryan should be considered. I can count on one hand how many poles I've seen throw checks and recover as fast as he can.

League MVP

Postby teslax14 on Thu Apr 14, 2005 3:22 pm

You know it's funny to me that people talk about guys on their teams being league MVP yet they don't play well against top competition. A league MVP should be their team's leader in all aspects, that includes playing well in big games. A lot of talk has been going around that Weitz or Sonkin from Washinton should get it. Why, because they score a lot of goals against mediocre teams? Julian Coffman and Danny Ernst both score consistanly in big games. They get their teammates involved and that is what makes a league MVP, not one that can rack up the points in meaningless games.
