The United States economy needs immigrants to function. Period.

In a capitalist system such as that of the United States, production depends on the exploitation of low-cost labor in order to maximize profits, as the intensity of competition suppresses prices. The reforms of the early 20th century (especially the New Deal) gave the American worker an unprecedented amount of protection through the ability to unionize and negotiate on a level playing field with business owners. As a result of this and a demographic shift towards declining fertility, the US would suffer a severe shortage of low-wage workers without immigration, which would lead to an inflationary cycle as increased wages pushed prices up.

Hmmmmm.......maybe we should get rid of all the immigrants and ship them back to their respective countries? Of course, that would include all the supposed "Americans" that migrated here from all over the world after Columbus "discovered" this continent and named it America...even though he mistankenly thought he was in India. How about the idea that we can let the real Native Americans off of the consignment camp, i mean reservations, and give them back the land that was originally their own. that would only be fair, right?

Perhaps we could let them rule their land and we should be forced to learn their language, since they were here when "Americans" immigrated here. Its a great idea to close the same borders that allowed each and every one of YOUR ancestors to enter the good ole US of A and have the opportunity to live a better life, be successful, and even play college lacrosse. that sounds like a fantastic idea!!!!
peace.

I think the courts findings are inherently false. The supremecy law usually is enacted when there is a conflict between jurisdictions. As far as I know there is not a law or ordiance governing illegal immigants and their housing rights on the federal level. The fair housing act does not cover illegal immigrants.

Poor ruling by the court. Local jurisdiction should have stood until there was a federal law.

Excellent editorial in Tuesday's NY Times about the immigration issue, one which counters very effectively the mean-spirited and restrictionist views of the writer of the "Time to Take Down the Bird Feeder" column:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/03/opini ... ref=slogin

The coda to this piece bears repeating:

"Every time this country has singled out a group of newly arrived immigrants for unjust punishment, the shame has echoed through history. Think of the Chinese and Irish, Catholics and Americans of Japanese ancestry. Children someday will study the Great Immigration Panic of the early 2000s, which harmed countless lives, wasted billions of dollars and mocked the nation’s most deeply held values."

Amen, I say.
