When Richard Clarke wrote his tell all book, Against All Enemies, the White House Spokesman said "Well, why, all of a sudden, if he had all these grave concerns, did he not raise these sooner? This is one-and-a-half years after he left the administration. And now, all of a sudden, he's raising these grave concerns that he claims he had and I think you have to look at some of the facts. One, he is brining this up in the heat of a presidential campaign. he has written a book and he certainly wants to go out there and promote that book"

Oh yea that was Scott McClellan back in March of 2004.

That being said, he does have a well-established hatred of Bush and a documented goal of getting him out of office, so things like this book that he funds, I would take with a grain of salt.

I don't mean to attack you, but your quote sort of summed up the issue.

Anyways, I'm sure that a man running, among other things, a multi-billion dollar investment group pays very close attention to what a subsidiary of a subsidiary does or does not publish, and does so to help further his own personal political agenda...NOT.

And if you would say that this is, in fact, totally possible and/or plausible, than it would also logically be possible that the corporations who directly own news outlets could possibly shape the content of what their news outlets produce. But of course that could never happen...

It hardly qualifies as testimony and I really don't think that the White House's PR rep was privy to the decision making process...and I only hope that he doesn't have the security clearance to be present at discussions of high level intelligence. Get this guy under oath and have him produce some evidence and then we'll see what we see.

If you are right Cliff, then why should the media even bothering covering future White House press conferences? If the Press Spokesman is really so clueless about what is going on in the Administration then how can he or she speak for it?

A couple of things after watching McC. on Meet The Press:
Every time Russert confronted him with statements he made as WH Press Sec. that do not correspond with what he says in the book, McC. struggled to come up with an answer. The best he could do was "I was in the WH bubble". I would have thought he would have been better prepared to address this fundamental issue, did he not expect these questions?

As to the Plame Affair, I don't think anything will come of it. He has already testified to a Grand Jury on the matter and I don't think this book will contain any new information as he would setting himself up for perjury charges. Interesting exchange from the show when Russert asked if he would unseal that testimony and McC. apparently didn't know the legality of such a move. You just wrote a book discussing the inner working of the WH and you don't know what you can talk about publicly??? Really?

I think McC. is a man who was in over his head at the WH and is now attempting to make a buck on the Bush WH before they leave office. He never clearly addressed his apparently warm relationship with Bush all the way through the time of his leaving that would seem incongruous with what his feeling are in the book. Nor does he address the change in tone from his book proposal to what he actually wrote. Russert offered him ample opportunity to address these issues and McC. proved himself to be not up to the task.

But at least he apologized to Tony Clarke for saying those mean things about him back in 04.

Possibly, yes. But would the Special Prosecutor be more likely to go after McC for perjury or go after the decision makers -- Rove and Cheney -- who he didn't have enough evidence to prosecute for the initial leak and cover-up? The White House clearly coordinated a campaign to "out" Plame, and that Rove and Cheney were very involved -- as McClellan now says. But Fitzgerald only prosecuted Scooter Libby, who served as a scapegoat/fall guy and had Bush commute his sentence anyway. I'd say that testimony from McClellan could and should send both Cheney and Rove to prison, where they belong.

You could be right, Cliff, but I watched McClellan's interviews and take him for his word -- he feels great remorse for lying to the world while representing a corrupt White House and for doing his part to help sell an unneccesary war on false pretenses. I, for one, believe him. He sure won't make as much money off this book as if he kept his mouth shut and didn't burn all his bridges with the GOP party he has been loyal to his whole career.

And isn't it fascinating that in all these attacks on McC the Bushies use words like "puzzled" and "sad" and go on to attack his character but don't bother to refute any of the facts of this whole affair?
