I would have to agree. UNC is a great team, but there is no way they will leap frog teams such as Emory for an at large bid, especially when they're idle.

Re: Emory, Fort, SJU

Postby emlax13 on Sat May 03, 2008 2:27 pm
WOW...Fort Lewis really made a statement today. I love it! Playoff lax! Not calling off the dogs, rather letting them eat!
This muddies the water even more and puts a lot of emphasis on the UMLL tourney, particularly SJU, and Fort Lewis's tilt tomorrow against the winner fo the Westminster game.
All three teams lost key games down the stretch - Emory (to Elon and Dayton), SJU (Dayton, UST and a 11-10 scare by NDSU) and FLC (UNC). None have top 5 wins. None have any positive momentum, except maybe FLC now.
And dont forget the possible GVSU/Dayton matchup (although I think both the teams are locks as dropping far enough to be out would be tough @ this point).
Emory is definitely not out of the picture, although they are a sitting duck, as they are not playing this week.
I think Emory, SJU and Fort make up the bubble @ this point and any 2 could be justified as AL qualifiers.
Emory does have an early season win vs. Elon which is a top 5 win. Why is St. Johns above Emory? In like Games (Dayton, St. Thomas), Emory scored 15 and let in 23. Meanwhile St. John's scored 14 and let in 25 to these teams. Emory and St. John's both have 2 top 25 wins but Emory's are against #5 Elon and #13 UNCC. St. Johns wins are against #14 UNC and #15 UVSU. If St. John's plays St. Thomas again and loses, Emory will have a top 5 record of 1-3 and St. John's will be 0-3. I know St. John's has been a top team in the past but based on this year's season should be ranked below Emory.

So, with Ft. Lewis' showing this weekend, I think they are a lock for an at large bid. I think that Grand Valley and Dayton are also locks. The last at large looks like its going to come down to St. John's or Emory. SJU's win over NDSU strengthens their case, but if they get blown out by St. Thomas, who knows what will happen.

You also have to remember when talking about wins that you have these wins for Emory and SJU according to the teams current position. I THINK when Emory beat Elon, Elon was not a top 5 team. SJU's wins were when UVSC and UNC were at a higher ranking then they are now. It is hard to take into account changes in the polls when comparing wins to ranked teams.

How bad of a loss to St. Thomas does St. John's need to have for Emory to move up above them or is this a moot point? Elon was ranked 19th when Emory played them but have since improved their ranking just a little bit.

Its hard to say in numbers how much but the voters will need to see without argument that emory has played a tougher schedule and is a better team

Things just took a huge swing:

SJU 8 UST 7

SJU was up 8-2 with about 8 minutes left, but true to form UST is never out of the game. It was an ugly game as usual. A tough game for any fan of lacrosse to watch. SJU Played four quarters, UST could hardly pull together one. It still boggels my mind that UST could have scored an own goal for the second game in a row vs. SJU. Painful to watch.

Congrats to SJU for making it happen. It goes to show that you have to play a whole season.

Looks like a bubble team is out to make room for UST in the AL ranks. I'd think GVSU, UST and Dayton will lock up ALs. The fourth will be hard to decipher.

I think Harding should crack the top ten after some of the results from this weekend. MSU got blown out in the first round of their playoffs, so they should fall to 13-18 range. SCAD has been ranked high all year for no good reason other than they are in the SELC. Harding beat an under ranked Dordt team in the GRLC championship. Dordt handled #20 Creighton in playoffs, and then Harding put Dordt down. I think they are a contender to be in the top 10. They have been working through the polls season in and season out. I would put them at 9 or 10.

You beat me to it WallyLax. I think you could shuffle Western Oregon and Harding back and forth in the 9 and 10 spot. I would give more credit to Harding because they went outside their conference to schedule top tier teams. If you saw the Harding v. Dayton game, then you would know that Harding can play w/ them and even beat them.
