It was a racial slur that referred to Asians (The word can also refer to a problem with one's armor) . Around 1980, Pekin became the Dragons.

Winner! "Dragons" was definitely an upgrade.

"Technically" St. John's doesn't have a mascot. This is why Johnnies, Tommies, Gusties, Oles, etc. came in to play way back when. They were affectionate terms of endearment that somehow stuck on over time.

So yeah... good times...

There is some school in Iowa, I forget the name of the actual school, but they were called the Midgets or Fighting Midgets.

TexOle, nice Thunder Ducks reference. I was always a fan of the giant duck with the lightning bolt painted on the wall of their gym.

It made me think of Darkwing Duck. I remember riding my bike over to Richland so I could go fishing. One time I got caught fishing in the Japanese Gardens.

St. Olaf's mascot is the Lion. The nickname currently used to describe the students is the Oles. Often times people point to Oles coming from a large number of guys on the football team named Ole so everyone just yelled 'Go Oles!" The name then stuck.

Where does St. John's get the rat?

There is a long story behind it, check out page 18 of the link.

Basically it involved making fun of a basketball coaches wife in the 50's, a guys messy room, and getting rowdy at different sporting events. Everything comes from the "Rat Pack" ( a group of male cheerleaders and SI's Craziest Cheerleaders). It makes very little sense unless you are a part of the super top secret Johnnie Brotheren.

I thought the old basketball arena way back in the day was infested with rats, and it was then known as "rat hall". Of course, those cheering in rat hall could have only one name... the rat pack.

I know, this is probably far too simplistic...
