PNCLL 2008 All-Conference

Postby Forty Two on Sun Apr 27, 2008 11:25 pm

In observing the West Coast game, what it all seems to come down to is heritage. The East Coast is ahead on that count, but in Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Arizona and for sure, California, the gap is progressively closing.

5 years ago, there were no "Pups" teams out here - now there are. It is just a matter of time.

It will be really cool to see the 2015 (or so) NCAA Championship played between a team from the West, and a team from the East.

Voters and others might find this information interesting -- or not.
2008 PNCLL D-1 Conference Games Only (8 games per team, all common opponents):

DEFENSE - Goals Allowed (per game)

Oregon - 50 (6.25)
Simon - 56 (7.0)
OSU - 80 (10.0)
Mont. - 87 (10.9)
Wash. - 88 (11.0)
Gonz. - 91 (11.4)
BSU - 98 (12.3)
Idaho - 104 (13.0)
WSU - 174 (21.8

OFFENSE - Goals Scored (per game)

Oregon - 148 (18.5)
Simon - 131 (16.4 )
Mont. - 119 (14.9)
Wash. - 108 (13.5)
OSU - 91 (11.4)
Idaho - 72 (9.0)
Gonz. - 68 (8.5)
BSU - 59 (7.4)
WSU - 32 (4.0)

WINS
Simon 8
Oregon 7
Washington 5
Montana 5
Oregon State 5
Gonzaga 3
Idaho 2
Boise 1
WSU 0

Some Comments: Most important stat is SFU's 8 wins (stats are just numbers, it's all about winning the game); Oregon's defense and SFU's defense stand out compared to the rest; strong parity in the middle of the pack is clearly indicated by the stats; Gonz., BSU, and Idaho defenses were close (statistically) to OSU, Mont., and Washington; Montana, SFU and Oregon score in similar quantity.

Beating Duke obviously would be quite a stretch, but beating teams that are in the middle of the pack would be highly attainable IMO.

no, even though talent in our league is rising, lacrosse participation is rising nationally. What separates us from NCAA schools is matching talent with lottery won genetics. Our league's talent is usually endowed to players with less then the A typical athletic physique. Where as D1 schools (a finite number) have luxury to chose what 18 yr old kids they want to recruit. Even though talent is rising in our league and NCAA coaches have the incentive to recruit by geography, the collective pncll all-stars would not come away with the w against the average NCAA d1 school. I believe we would compete, but it wouldn't be an edge of your seat experience. Some animals are created more equal then others.

I don't know about that, I have seen and played against many players in D1 including guys who have "gifted genes". There have been many gifted athelets in the MCLA, and I was saying that if we could magically put them all on 1 team they could compete with the middle of the pack. Watch Towson U, they are not very good at all and most of them can't go both ways. And they are middle of the pack talent. I am not saying that an all PNCLL team would be beating up on top 25 teames (there are 78 D1 varsity teams I believe), I do think that could get wins V.S. teams like Bellarmine, Quinnipiac, VMI etc. I make this statement based on my experiences playing against Varsity players at MLL tryouts, and elite men's league games across the nation. There have been many times where I am the only player who didn't play back east in college, and many times I have ended up being the go to guy on the field. Granted I have put on 35 LBS and am fully healed since last season, but that has all come with hitting the weight room and dedicating myself to a strict conditioning program. Granted maybe 3 years wouldn't go back far enough and it would be more like 5 years. Watch a D1 game this year, and besides the Bratton twins, Paul Rabil and Danowski who is the Adrian Peterson of D1 lacrosse? Take Hopkins for example, if you are telling me that Steven Boyle and Kevin Huntley are physically gifted you need to look again. Kevin Huntley has devolped a nice beer belly since he was a freshman, and Steven Boyle's 40 time was timed with a sun dial last I heard! Jamison Whitehead runs a 4.5 40, is 6' 4" 240 LBS and is getting looks from the NFL being a tight end, and he played MCLA ball. Granted he lifts everyday since he was our starting tight end, but I feel anyone can can become a better athlete by putting in the hard work.

I agree with Tyler 100%. The difference between MCLA and D1 is not athleticism and in many cases now not even a difference in actual "lacrosse" talent. The difference between D1 and MCLA teams is the depth and amount of elite level talented players. There are many players in the PNCLL D1 that could make an NCAA D1 roster if they wanted to. The difference is the commitment, east coast style of play, and amount of others guys actively trying and capaple of proving they are better than you.

Even D2 probly has some athletes that could make a D1 roster. To use the ever popular Jamison Whitehead example, I have a hard time thinking he couldn't make a majority of NCAA D1 teams. If he did the difference would lie in the people then around him and his greater responsibility to a more elite level team. You just don't get that commitment atmosphere often in the MCLA.

I love the use of Jamison as he somehow couldn't break the 2nd team for PNCLL!!

Back to what this thread is supposed to be about...all-conference. Will Patton from Willamette has my vote for Coach of the Year in D2. Without Will I wouldn't be surprised if the team folded like L&C did. He has turned the team that was once football guys looking for someone to hit into a true lacrosse team. Not to mention that he has taken them on OOC games while most of the PNCLL teams play none.
I know you can obviously argue for Kyle at UPS, or Homma at WOU, or JC at CWU, but I think Coach of the Year should go to the guy that makes the most of what he has and that is Will this year. I know the votes have already been cast so this may be a moot point but I have to say it. Hats off to you Will!!! Great job!

For those of you who are waiting to see the All-Conference team for the PNCLL. . .you are going to have to wait until Sunday.

The team will be officially announced on Sunday at the completion of the D2 Championship game. We will award the Championship trophy to the D2 winner, and then announce and award certificates to the top performers in both divisions. . .1st team, 2nd team and HM.

We will also award the D2 Final Four MVP at this time, and also the season awards for both divisions. . .Offensive and defensive players of the year, Overall League MVP, Coach of the year, and yes, the Freshman of the year award.

We hope the top players from teams NOT in the Final Four make the trip out to Missoula. If you are one of those players and you plan to be in attendance, please let me know when you see me or PM me that you plan to attend.

In less than 48 hours we'll know two of our finalists. . .I hope to see many of you out there.
