We discussed this very same topic a few years ago. Kyle Hawkins came up with a high school in Missouri (Columbia) that had a nickname of Kewpie Dolls.

There is a high school in South Georgia (Cairo) that is called the Syrupmakers (after the local industry).

Bonus points to anyone (Illinoisan or not) who can remember the former nickname for Pekin High School.

Warning: Not for the PC-sensitive.

Had an ex-girlfriend who went to that high school. In any case, it's a blue 6-legged wildcat.

North Carolina School of the arts:

The Fighting Pickles. Seriously.

A good match-up against the fighting artichokes.

It was a racial slur that referred to Asians (The word can also refer to a problem with one's armor) . Around 1980, Pekin became the Dragons.

There are so many offensive nicknames still around throughout the country. My wife attended Moline (IL) High School. They are the Maroons. Like Stanford U., Moliners say that their nickname refers to the color. Though when my wife's parents went to MHS, the Maroons mascot was an indian brave since "maroon" is a slur for indians.

My self I am a fan of the Watersmeet (MI) Nimrods and the Poca (WV) Dots.

Since no one is jumping in with the official Whitman College battle cry, I will:

I had a friend from Monroe, Wisconsin and they were the Cheese Makers.

There is some school in Iowa, I forget the name of the actual school, but they were called the Midgets or Fighting Midgets.

TexOle, nice Thunder Ducks reference. I was always a fan of the giant duck with the lightning bolt painted on the wall of their gym.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is located in the neighborhood of Speedway in Indianapolis. The Speedway HS mascot would be none other than...

The Sparkplugs.
