Lacrosse in the summer??
The first day of practice for high school golf, softball and track teams in Minnesota was March 10. More than six weeks later, many of those teams have not yet taken part in an outdoor competition. Baseball teams, which began practice March 17, also have done little more than work out indoors...........

As a baseball coach stuck up in a gym in northern Minnesota, I agree with the idea of summer sports. Why not move these sports back at least a month?
However, Iowa has a summer varsity baseball season. I have heard from people that, in some communities, many athletes don't come out for baseball because of busy summer schedules, including working to pay for college.
The one that amazes me is why girls don't switch volleyball and softball? Fall has good weather suited for outdoor sports, while spring has terrible weather suited for indoor sports.

They need to shift the start of the HS season one week later and end it two weeks later. This would allow teams to play two games per week, not the 4, 5, and 6 some teams are forced to play now. Those stretches of games without practice don't give the players a chance to learn, they result in physically beat up and tired players, and I can say that working a game between two teams that are playing their fourth day in a row is no joy to officiate.
They wouldn't let football or hockey teams play 5 days in a row, so they shouldn't do it with lacrosse.
I read Milea's column in the paper. While he has a good point--that the weather in the spring sucks--moving lacrosse to summer would be an overreaction (he claims that since it's only a second-year MSHSL sport there's no compelling tradition for having lacrosse in the spring, ignoring that fact that it's a spring sport everywhere else it's played!). Shifting it a little later would be enough.
In summer, lots of people--players, coaches, officials--take vacations. It would be a nightmare.

Are you sure officials only take vacations in the summer?
Agreed the sport should not move to the summer. Wisconsin has their season extend all the way until the end of June which I think is a bit late.
I don't know what they did elsewhere, but in Virginia we started practice on March 1 (just like Wisconsin) and finished our season at the end of May, playing two games a week most weeks starting in late March/early April.
I realize the weather isn't as bad, but if that is a concern, just leave the domes up a bit longer so that they can be used until mid April.

Yeah short season is not helping the growth of the players.
It does not allow for coaches to be able to install detailed strategies which hurts the players Lacrosse IQ.
Philly has it start in March and end around memorial day weekend. I think we played a max of 3 games per week.
The domes could definitely have stayed up longer this year for sure!

I don't know if there's a mechanism to do this but it would make sense for the teams to rent a couple of the domes all day Saturday and Sunday (8am-10pm) one or 2 weekends in March, have everyone play 1-2 games each weekend. Takes the burden off the April as there will be fewer games to cancel and more opportunity for any necessary makeups.
Of course next year it will be 70 degrees starting Feb 15th and we'll all forget the hassles of the 2008 season.

This is not a feesible option, as not all teams right now are fully funded at the Varsity level....it would increase fees, and costs to schools to "pay" to rent a field, when they would rather just wait for the weather to improve.
I am lucky because our AD is willing to cover the charges, but some schools just cant....
Not to mention in order for that to even happen , you have to secure all the dome times in June - August of 2008 for 2009.....
