Lacrosse in the Wall St. Journal

Postby EvanFSU on Thu Apr 03, 2008 7:59 am

Interesting article in today's Wall Street Journal about the amount of lax players ending up with careers on Wall St. I actually work on Wall St, although not for any of the big corps., so I can definitely agree with this article. I meet guys and girls down here all the time that played lacrosse at one level or another.

Being from the NYC area and playing my post collegiate ball there, I would have to say that around 30% of the guys I played with in clubs and the Pros all had downtown jobs. It was a great gig given the flexibility they had for traveling to games in Canada, West Coast, etc. It's almost becoming the 2nd home for Post Collegiate lacrosse players...

So, if you want a great job, and still play lacrosse as is your life depended on it, get good grades, take your Series 7 and hope to get on Wall St.

Apparently, I missed that memo, so I figured I would pass it on....

I had a bunch of college buddies go to Wall Street after college....

and knowing lacrosse players were running the show means the current state of financial market doesn't surprise me....(insert smiley face here!!)

Fortunately for us the old Goldman Sachs quote " 80 % of the people in this building are here because of the other 20%" still holds true. Having jumped from Morgan, to Goldman and finally to Deutche most of the "lacrosse" guys were like me, lower totem pole mid managers etc. The big money players all are still coming from the ranks of the MBD analysts and IBD analysts. Those jobs are real hard to get and harder to get for a guy who played lax in school.

Plus, who makes a "real" decision on Wall Street unless you went to a tier one MBA school?

Not trying to knock the lax guys, there is just a big difference between the deal makers and the guys who support the deals.
